My PC has gave up sooner than later & although I was planning on upgrading I've been caught out. I'm not familiar with what's good & not so good at the minute so if some folks could give me a few pointers as to what I should be looking at.

Here's some details:
Budget 500 - 600 absoulte max. although if something suitable can be had for much cheaper I'd be grateful.
I already have monitor (1650 x 1080), keyboard, mouse, soundcard, case & PSU
I don't intend make use of SLI or Crossfire
I haven't overclocked before but I'll maybe have a stab at it this time.
Uses are mostly gaming and a bit of photoshop although I've been happy with my current AMD 64 3700+ for photoshop so that'll give you an idea of what sort of user I am.

I generally upgrade every few years so something that would be do me for a while is the goal. I wasn't sure if a Q6600 would suit that purpose or if a cheaper dual core would have been every bit as good for my needs. I'd also thought about an E8400 although recent price increas have ruled that one out. Would eithe rof those be better for gaming than the other just out of interest?

I have no clue clue regarding graphics cards, I currently have a 7800GT and mostly play Eve online though wouldn't mind having a stab at some of the more recent releases although I'm not one for benchmarking or playing Crysis at as high as detail as possible. Would it be worth holding on to the 7800GT until nvidias 9 series hit the shelves? If not then something that works well at 1650 x 1080 max.

Ram & motherboard to suit the above. I'd thought about an Asus P5K-E although again it might be too much for what I require, to be honest I looked at the available motherboards & it was a minefield.

I'm also thinking of moving to Vista and may as well make use of 4GB RAM.

A few ideas would be great and don't feel that you have to hit the budget if something suitable could be had for less.

not sure if GPU is overkill or would a 3870x2 be a better option

I think that the GPU is overkill for Tachyon's stated needs, jak731.

Assuming most stuff is being reused, this would be a fantastic buy:

That's great folks. I appreciate the help here as I'm currently posting this on my old P3 500. :) Those are the components I'm after Billy, all the other items will be reused.

As I'll upgrade to Vista how do I stand with the use of my old HDD's as everything on them is related to XP? My main HDD has Windows on a partiton, is it just a matter of putting Vista on this or would I be better buying a small drive for Windows to keep everything new and hassle free? I@ll also need to look at the differences between the Home & Premium versions as well.

Just off to work here so I'll look over the specs when I get home. Thanks guys.

for the £40 extra, if you don't want to keep the 7800 i'd go with the GTX over the GTS.

and i'd shop around for an 8200, which should bring you in just under the £600.

How soon you plannig to get this? Know your system gave up on you but there'll be OcUK X38 mobo out in march(hopefully) with PCI-E 2.0 for ~£100. As you said you want it to last for a while so i'd invest into board with pci-e 2.0.

If you can't wait that long then i'd go with billy's build with one of the pci-e 2.0 boards which start @ £130. You could save a bit by going for AC Freezer 7 pro instead of tuniq.
On air imo you looking at getting that cpu to 3.0 - 3.4 max if you get a good chip. AC will be fine for that.

What PSU you got? Just to make sure. ;)

Appreciate the help here guys, thanks.

Bayo000, PSU is an Enermax Liberty 500w. If needs be I can use this old P3 500 for a while yet although if pci-e 2.0 is a worthwhile investment then I'd consider trying to fit it in my budget.

Being a bit clueless here, is the choice of CPU dependant on my ability to overclock it? Like I said I haven't tried overclocking before so I'm a bit unsure of how well I'll manage. I ask because it runs at 2.2ghz but then so does my current amd 64 3700+ I'm sure there's something else in there that makes all the difference though besides the 2.2ghz. If I decided to keep it a stock due to my inabilty to overclock (dunno how difficult it is) then would it still be a good choice of CPU?

Just been chatting to a guy I play Eve with. he was telling me that "Eve uses a hell of a lot of CPU, before and after trinity" Basically as Eve is pretty much 90% of what I play I'm prepared to spend a little bit more in the CPU department if there's something there that would be worthwhile. Sorry to move the goalposts on you there.

If I meet ever meet any of you folks in a bar I'll get you all a drink for helping a noob out here. But seriously you do a great job with all the advice you offer.
