Looking to upgrade my ageing E6600 to something much better. PC is used to run some virtualisation, video encoding and some games. My current GPU should be fine for the time being (ATI 4870 with 1Gb ram)

Been out of the game for a while, so not sure on what's hot or not these days.

Hoping that I can get away with something decent for under £400.

-New mobo
-New CPU
-16GB ram
-SSD hard drive (got a 1TB samsung that I can use in conjunction for data)

Thanks for any advice that you can give.

Thanks for the reply.

I think that I'm going to bend the budget and put an SSD in as well...would be a shame to hamper a system like this. I assume that M4 128GB is the way to go?

Oh, and is an aftermarket cooler required? Is the stock cooler too noisy? I'm not going to overclock.

Thanks for the reply. I have a Lian-Li PC-7 case. Not sure if its even sold anymore - got it from overclockers about 4-5 years ago.

For Ram, I think that it would be better to go for 2x8gb instead of 4x4 - just in case I want to put another 16gb in at some point in the future.
