Hi everyone,

I haven't upgraded my motherboard or CPU for a very long time, since 2013 infact and I am really out of touch with the current CPU and Mobo tech.

Here's my current specs:

  • Corsair Carbide 400Q V2
  • Kingston HyperX Savage Red 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 PC3-14400C9 1866MHz Dual/Quad Channel
  • Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive
  • Gigabyte Motherboard to fit the CPU
  • Intel 4820K 3.70GHz (Ivybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor (purchased in 2013!!!)
  • Corsair Hydro H100i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
  • Nvidia 1070
  • Another SSD, and a normal 2TB drive for random storage.

I want to keep as much as possible, but swap out the Motherboard, CPU, Cooler and Ram if I need to. Currently, I'm playing Squad, Post Scriptum, War Thunder and Division 2 on a 1440p Dell monitor (the one with G-sync).

I guess my budget can stretch over £1000, I'm looking for a solid reliable Mobo.

That's when I also bought "main" parts.
Anyway would be better wait to summer.
Zen2 might drop a bomb on Intel.

In CES AMD demoed engineering sample matching 9900K's processing power at ~50W lower system power consumption.
So there's tweaking room in boost clocks for release, even if TSMC's more modern than Intels node hasn't matured from last year.
Also "chiplet"design rumoured in December was confirmed and shown CPU package had empty spot the size of another 8 core "computing die".
And AMD hinted to pushing forward in cores/processing power per price.
(and they can only lose by holding back/greedy pricing)
So 8 core/16 thread models might come for under £250, with hundred more getting 12c/24t.
And into 9900K's price range they could well release 16c/32t monster shredding 9900K (or what's left of it after 12c/24t) to pieces and peeing on its grave.

AMD's 50 year anniversary fair month away will likely bring more information.
And some surprise launch pulling rug from under the Intel would be certainly fitting for such event.

As for other parts DDR3 hasn't been used in years, so you'll need new RAM.
And thanks to cartel of DRAM makers that costs more now than 2013, especially if you want fast high frequency low latency DIMMs.
(good reason to go for AMD to at least avoid paying Intel's rape and robbery prices for lack of proper advance in cores&performance per price)

Also unless it was modern high quality model, PSU would be likely due for update.

And waterpipe coolers have many degrading/wearing parts/things, that wouldn't trust that cooler to be very reliable anymore after all these years.
Even if you refilled loop, pump has likely seen its best days.

Anyway by giving up fashion you could get lots of cooling per noise performance at affordable price.
Despite of marketing's claims water pipes in place of heatpipes has never increased cooling power automatically.
Very affordably priced Scythe Mugen 5 is step behind best heatpipe coolers and would likely beat that Corsair in cooling at low noise.

Thanks EsaT, I will wait until the summer! The PSU is a few years old and runs really well, so I don't think I will need to replace it and I agree about my current cooler, I will replace that.

You really don't need a new CPU any time soon unless you need more cores. And really, your GPU is just fine. A new CPU will give you higher minimum frame rates in games and thus a higher average, but @EsaT is quite correct when he suggests you wait for the new AMD CPUs.

I'm really surprised my current CPU has held up so well for so long! I will wait until the summer to see what AMD do.

Are there any new 'must haves' for motherboards these days (m2 etc.)?
