Ok so I possible want a new mainboard, processor and memory. I also need a new GC but that isn't really essential.

I was thinking of the i5 4690k as it has great overclocking specs. Looking at the list of cpu test scores in the other subforum it look like putting it on an Asus Maximums Hero would work well. (Copying part of pastymuncher's build)

However I started looking at the mainboards and ended up totally lost. I don't really want to overspend so saving money on the mainboard is good, but I still want that rock soild overclock.

I will not be sli'ing or crossfire'ing, I can't afford it and can't find my current card to double it up now! :(

I have never used watercooling before but am open to trying something like the corsair H100i (IIRC) other wise happy to spend on the air cooling needed to overclock, so the noctua coolers are in budget. Would I gain much more by jumping from the £65 noctua air coolers to the corsair water block?

I'm almost totaly lost amongst all the ram choices too, I'm guessing going for 8gb as fast as I want to spend is the right option?

I dont have a set budget, so I'm really looking for a good spec but not one where I'm hitting the bleeding edge. If an option which is £10-£20 cheaper exists and isn't really costing me much in performance then I'm interested in that.

I know I'm looking at the best part of £400 anyway.

What is a good option?

This will be going in a cosmos case, with an antex 850 sig psu, dvd rw, and my ageing Geforce GTX 560ti twin frozor card.

How's this for starters:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £167.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £103.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H80i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler £74.99
1 x Kingston HyperX 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-14900C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black/Red (HX18C9BRK2/8-OC) £64.99
Total : £421.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

This would allow you to overclock and once you've got a new graphics card, you'd wish you'd made the move sooner ;)

Nice start, the extra £13-14 quid for the h100i not worth it? My pc's always seem to run hot sigh...

Also why gigabyte? (although I'd lvoe a free pair of headphones!)

I'm always curious as to what people think gigabyte verses asus.. etc..

I noticed on some asus boards that they had some tunnel with fans pulling air from the back of the case around the main board components. With the water cooler I thought that made sense but with an air cooler that would suck in some of the air the cou fans where blowing out the case...

I've decided on a different route, I can't quite afford 421 now, but I do want this kind of system eventually. What I'm now thinking is a more incremental approach, where I buy cheaper parts now and better parts again next year.

I'm thinking about something like this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4440 3.10GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £131.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
1 x Asus H81M-E Intel H81 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £39.95

about £220ish...

But I've no idea whether I've missed something, if a fiver or a tenner here and there buys me a lot more then I'd like to know!

All help really appreciated.

No use at all. Won't fit in. Here's what I'd do for £220

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-4150 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £89.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLD38G2133HC11ADC01) £65.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £65.99
Total : £231.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

8GB of decent RAM, i3 and a Z97 board which will allow the faster RAM (you specced 2400Mhz RAM in a H81 board, you'll only be able to run it at 1600Mhz) and will also allow overclocking should you slot in an i5k/i7k processor in in the future

Ok so we've moved some processor cash into the mainboard.

What will that give me? The I3 has fewer cores right? Or do you just prefer this set up?

Yep, I'd go for this. i3 has dual core + hyperthreading

- Z97 board allows for faster RAM (1600Mhz+ speeds)
- More features etc on the board
- In the future, you may want to upgrade and therefore you can slot in an i5k or i7k and overclock :)

Yeah I'm a bit miffed as I just built a system around that board for a m8, I'd have got cheaper ram or spent more on the board if I had known. One lives and learns.

So the best option would be the i5 with the ram on your board?

Just set the XMP profile which the RAM will come with (dropdown menu in the BIOS, select Profile1 or something named like that) and all is well :)
