Current system is:
MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
2x8GB Corsair CMK16GX4M2A2400C14 Vengeance Ram
3070 GPU
500GB M.2 Sandisk G5 BICS4 SSD system drive
1TB M.2 WD WDS100T2B0A SSD games drive

Uses - it's my games machine (work is on a separate laptop), Currently play World of Tanks (can't stop :( ), AC Shadows, Last of Us 2

System is broadly fine for what I use if for, although my brother suggested for some more recent games 32GB ram would help.

What would you upgrade and in what order?

Or given the system is already a few years old, would you start saving for a whole system upgrade?

PSU is a Corsair RM850x

Budget is flexible - don't mind spending more for a better upgrade.

I've never bought the latest fastest - always one back - hence 3070 not the 3090.

Case is a decent size Corsair case with loads of space inside - PSU is at the bottom if that matters!

So looking at costs:
5700X - £140 - or - 5700X3D - £209 (is the extra cache really worth it?)
32GB 3600 Ram - £125 (Corsair vengeance 2x16) only £90 for 3200 ram.
5070 - £500 (£340 if I sold my 3070 for £160)

So it feels as though the best bang for the buck would probably be:
1) RAM
2) GPU
3) CPU

Thoughts?

For £500 the 9070 non XT is a better option, on average it's faster and sports more VRAM. I wouldn't personally buy a 12gb card as of today, if you absolutely must stick with Nvidia I'd try and push to the 5070ti given how long you seem to keep your hardware.

I'd definitely recommend the 9070 as if you read my other posts I recently upgraded an AM4 platform with a 9070XT it's superb. Get the Radeon GPU. X3D CPU is great I bought secondhand 5800X3D but for the £270 I paid for it could have bought another AM5 platform. I'd just get 3200mhz ram because I also got burned with 3600mhz not working in my motherboard and it's a safe bet. So just get CL16 3200mhz ram I like crucial Ballistix ddr4 CL16. And I'd get the 5700X3D. Or if moneys no object then AM5 but there's lots of bargains around for the older platform and it's still more than capable.

For gaming, I'd absolutely prioritise GPU.

What resolution and refresh rate are you playing at? If you're not chasing high refresh rates, I'd next suggest a ram upgrade to unlock your CPU's full potential. 3200 is the sweet spot for your 3700x, but I'd go 3600 just in case you upgrade to 5700/5700x3d.
