Hi Guys

My friends son is looking to upgrage his current system. He predominantly plays Xplane 12.

Current spec

Intel i7 10700 CPU
3060 RTX
16gb ram
Gigabyte H510M H motherboard
Rampage RPG 600w Powersupply

I was thinking that maybe a secondhand 4070 RTX will be needed for a substantial bump in performance, but if so would he need a new power supply? He has about £550 to £600 for the upgrade. Where would you put the cash to upgrade the system?

Thank you

Thanks Tetras, he said the CPU is fine, just the graphics card that needs upgrading, he is at 1440p.
If we take his word for it, then you could go 9070, 9070 XT, 5070 or at a push: 5070 Ti (over budget by ~£100).

The 9070 and 5070 would be more comfortable for a 600 watt PSU, assuming that is a decent model. I don't know if that game prefers nvidia or AMD, or has preferential access and support for DLSS or FSR.

The 3060 uses quite a bit of power, around ~200 watts, so you're looking at a power envelope around 50 watts extra for both cards, though they can spike higher than that (and higher than the 3060).

A 9060 XT 16GB or 5060 Ti 16GB is still a meaningful upgrade and capable enough for 1440p, but personally I'd prefer to stick with the higher tier for longer-term gameplay at that resolution.

For that budget, and to get a big enough difference you're probavbly only looking at a GPU upgrade anyway.
HOWEVER
A VERY brief check of the forums suggests CPU is important, there are faster options than the 10700 but not by enough, an 11700 is a BAD upgrade for example. You then also have a smaller budget for the GPU.

He's probably not well served by half-arsing both components so maybe just go all in on the GPU, certainly you don't want less than a 4070 level of performance.
9070XT is probably the most obvious choice for price/performance (Check youtube for how it runs the game) The PSU is borderline wattage and looks to be a rather poor quality cheap unit, maybe a wise opportunity to upgrade it.
