Hi Everyone,

I last built a gaming system at the end of 2014 and since then only upgraded the Graphics Card about a year ago). Current build:

I am looking firstly to see if a switch to AMD and DDR4 is going to be worth the cost?

A few factors:
  • I would ideally like to keep my mini ITX Corsair case as I really like how compact and portable it is
  • I am content with 1080 gaming for the time being unless there is a really good priced higher res screen with good refresh rates for gaming
  • Not looking to upgrade graphics card at the moment
  • Mainly use system for gaming (Battlefield) but also for some light Photoshop editing and screen capture editing
  • Have a wired gigabit LAN
I have done a little research and come up with this upgrade:

I guess my first question is whether the performance increase will be worth the cost? It looks like it will be around £550 for Mobo, RAM and CPU and I hope to get about £250 back for my current parts?

  1. Can anyone comment on my choice of parts? RAM for example I am not sure which is best to go with.
  2. Is there anything I should consider I may be missing?
  3. Will my PSU be OK for these AMD mobo's?
  4. I think I need an adaptor plate to continue using my H100i cooling, anyone know of any issues with this mobo and such adaptor?
Thanks

i wouldn't bother changing currently...as long as the 4790k is oc-ed ;)

As above.

I would look at upgrading the monitor - larger/higher res - and then look again at upgrading after zen 3 release and you've (re)saved some more money.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I always felt there was gains to be had going DDR4, is it noticeable?

I tried following a few guides to OC the 4790k a while back but kinda gave up, do you know of any good methods / guides?

And lastly what monitor might be a good place to start researching? I found that even on low graphics settings I only get about 80 - 90 fps on BF5 which I expected higher with this graphics card, that's why I thought maybe I have a bottle neck?

Also too a UserBenchmark if it is of any use?

UserBenchmarks: Game 95%, Desk 83%, Work 61%
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K - 77.8%
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 - 105%
SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB - 110.2%
SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB - 117.3%
HDD: WD Blue 1TB (2012) - 74.6%
HDD: WD Red 3TB (2012) - 82%
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1866 C9 2x8GB - 50.3%
MBD: Asus Z97I-PLUS

I am guessing given I am on DDR3 there are not any significant gains to be had in upgrading my RAM to another model of RAM? Would 2400mhz RAM be worth it / noticeable?
