Back with a Vengeance.
in a nutshell, upgrade time again.
suggestions please for a mobo+chip.....either second hand or new.
what is the best bang-for-my-buck i can get?
i already have some good quality DDR ram which i'll port over but my 6800GT is AGP and will need to be replaced, again second hand or new.

upto 150-ish for a cpu
upto 100 for a mobo.
upto 175 or so for graphics card.(no intention of ever doing SLI/crossfire if that makes a difference)

thanks.

I wouldn't buy new till conroe is out but if you could get a good deal on some second hand stuff off someone else upgrading to conroe then this might be worth while

those amd 3700s on offer here are good value too

what can we expect from conroe in terms of performance and cost?

im moving from a mobile 2500xp that runs around 2.3 g.

the more i think about it the more i'm starting to figure my best option would be a 2nd hand opteron+a new/2nd hand mobo but i have no idea which is the best opty to go for.
146 cabne?
i'm one of those people that only reads up on stuff when i'm ready to buy and i've missed most of the opteron discussion :(

well do you wanna go for a dual core or single core chip? do you prefer amd, am2 or intel? would you mind going for the intel dual core?

do you overclock?

what do you use your machine for?

I upgraded from the same chip, I chose a64 because I could re-use my ram so I no sweet f-a about conroes. I also chose a 3700 sandiego over an opty due to it being slightly cheaper. now I've got it I'm happy as it overclocked dead easy from 2.2 to 2.75.

the main reason I say wait is basically economic if u Need a whole new system

sorry I can't help anymore

:)

If you get a conroe you would need to buy new DDR2 ram as well.
If you want to keep your DDR ram i'd go for the skt 939 3700+, only £93 down from £160. This would give you more money to spend on a better graphics card.

i'll try to answer to the best of my ability.
dual core or single core? i'm not fussed either way.

i've had AMD kit for years now, the last Intel i had was a 486/dx 66.
bang for buck is the name of my game and if the best value kit was Intel i'd have no problem going down that route.

i've overclocked my current cpu purely because it's so easy to do.i may watercool my new kit but initially it will be setup with some good air cooling.

i use my pc for gaming and general surfing/net activities.
i don't do anything that's IMHO very intensive such as video editing or rendering etc.

The A64 3700+ SD on offer, which also overclock as good as Opterons.
DFI mobo mentioned above is v.good.
The Connect3D X1800XT or HIS ICEQ X1900XT on special offer (depending on budget).

All offer great performance at really good prices.
