upgrade time again

Good chance the 290x will last longer than a 970 with dx12 if you plan on keeping it a while. That's what i'd get and you have the full 4gb memory.

Full 4GB of memory

And I'll counter you with, good chance you be able to get drivers for the 970 for longer than the 290x. ;)

Op please don't overlook a R9 290X or even 290 over a R9 380. Many uninformed people will not realise the Hawaii cards are significantly faster and higher specced than the 380.

Funniest thing I read for a while. Kepler cards such as the 780ti,Original Titan are well behind now compared to the 290X which was released around the same time.
AMD cards are all based on GCN so any improvements will filter down to the old cards too while Nvidia keeps changing architectures which results in less focus for the old cards.

You'll be lucky the 970/980's perform well once the new Pascal cards are out in 5-6 months. Expect only about 2 years worth of real support for Nvidia cards. I guess it's good business sense for Nvidia ;)
