Hey,

Slightly more than a simple 'spec me thread'

I'm looking at upgrading my current machine which has served me well however there is nothing salvageable as I shall be passing it down to family members.

I have around 850 to play with and will require a copy of windows.

I only play games and browse the web on my computer. In 1680*1024 res as this is the most my 22" monitor can support (as far as I am aware :p)

Is 850 enough at the moment for something to hopefully last me a good 2 years or so? Battlefield 3 will probably be my next long term game so it will need to be of a decent level (I am aware the specs at this moment are not known but we can all guess within reason)

I built this machine, so I am not against putting it together myself, however I do like the added years warranty of buying one of the OCUK prebuilt machines so if one seems suitable please advise me!

TLDR Cliff notes
850 budget
Gaming in 1680*1024 res only
Windows required
As close to silent as possible pref.
Not interested in over clocking so would need to be ample at stock
Last around 2-3 years

Thanks for reading!

Should definitely be able to get what you want for £850, I'd suggest actually looking at the OCUK configurer as they seem to be fairly well priced and are more flexible than the other pre-built systems....

If you chose to build it yourself:
Product Name Qty Price Line Total
OcUK Motherboard Bundle - Intel Core i5 2500K & Asus P8P67 Intel P67 Mainboard £286.00

Only thing to note about the build it yourself system is that I'd wait until the B3 Revision of the motherboard is in, but that shouldn't be too long now :)
Also as you're on a smaller monitor you may choose to swap out the 570 for a 560 and add in an SSD (might be more useful for you, just depends on what you think really)
I know you said you're not interested in overclocking, so could swap out the 2500k for a 2500, and an h67 Motherboard, however, in future overclocking would be useful for stretching the CPU slightly further, and getting a longer duration use time out of it :)

comes in a nice little amount under budget, and gives the option of going crossfire later, which will really help it last a long time. also, its a B3 revision board, so if you do decide to go with this build, theres no need to wait. the 6950's can be 'flashed' to become 6970's too.

i would suggest going for a nice big aftermarket CPU cooler, but im not gonna suggest which one because i know very little about them myself

*edit*
im not sure about this guys. would that power supply be good enough to handle 2 radeon HD 6970's in crossfire, and an overclocked CPU a couple of years down the line?

+1 for the above. Add in a 60Gb SSD, and you have a great machine. I'd probably swap the HDD for a Samsung F3 too.

Herp, "not interested in overclocking" - so no need for K series chip, or P series chipset.

This will suffice :p

- You could easily get away with a smaller PSU, but I like modular, and I like something that can last through builds :p
- Fastest mechanical HDD around
- However, mobo is not B3 revision, definitely worth waiting for that!

Thanks for the input guys, I'm aiming to be purchasing parts on the 1st of the month (payday :p)

Hopefully these motherboard revisions are just around the corner!
