Sorry for the flippant reply... I'm just searching around before I commit to a straight answer.... but I believe its has more to do with the chipset type ie P45 X48 G31 etc.

qx9650 is probably out of budget. on ebay, they start at £210 and go upto £800 (roughly original selling price).

Last time i saw a q6600 on OCUK, it was going for about £130, so i would look for one aroung that price point, and oc it.

not that much of an expert on monitors, but if your going <24", then i would reckon something slightly more meatier than a 4350 (im pretty sure your current card would run circles around it). a HD5670 for around £75, or wait for the hd 5570 to surface (i gather it not too far off the power of a 5670, but cheaper)

Popular mis-conception.

It does not have to have zillions of shaders or DX11 or all the latest gizmos to run media editing. I suggested a "4350 or similiar" because this is the most he will need for the tasks he wants to do as long as it will run HD quality video even at 16:9 or 16:10

Read the spec of the 4350 here

just because it does not start with a number "5" does not mean it's pants!!!!

end rant!!! :)

I would get the Q6600:

I upgraded from an E4500 at around 3GHZ to a Q6600 at a similar speed and the increase in performance for image editing and video encoding was quite large IMHO. The doubling of the L2 cache per core over the E4500 also helps a lot.

I would then consider spending the rest of the budget on a new graphics card such as the GTS250:

Many image editing and video editing programmes use CUDA and hence you can accelerate them using the GTS250. Of course check if the programmes you are using are CUDA accelerated though.

oh, i thought OCUK stopped selling it a few months ago and i didnt check before posting ... my bad :D

and with the graphics, "light gaming" is mentioned (although i didnt take that into account earlier), plus i believe photoshop is starting to offload tasks to the GPU now ... dont quote me on that...

personally i go with "newer is better", as hd5 series = 40nm = much less power comsumption (yes im aware that in the low end it probably means about 10w if that, but every little helps right?).

having said that, ive just arranged the 4300/4600 tab by price, and look at what came out cheapest:

a mid range card that is cheaper the the low end card from the same series. Benralph , i think youve got your graphics sorted :)

would it be better to get the ddr3 version for an xtra £7

Congrats on bagging the last Q6600 in stock!!

Sounds like your starting to fall into the same trap as I did with te graphics card issue!!!...lol

"If I spend a few extra quid I can get this one, on the other hand this one is only...."

It's easily done. Fraid it's "go for it time" my friend... lol :)

ive just brought a q6600 from here for 94.99

i dont think i need a 260gtx do i? would thiis not be overkill if i dont game? ive got ps3 for gaming

gtx260 is defo overkill

and benralph, check your figures again:
cheapest 4650 has 1024mb ddr2 for £35
an extra 7 quid get you a 4650 with 512mb ddr2 (not ddr3). my guess is that OCUK struck some kinda deal to get the £35 one that cheap
the cheapest 512mb GDDR3 4670 costs £54.

i really doubt that half the amount of slightly faster memory will bring enough of a performance gain to justify spending 55-60% more on it.

keep it cheap and cheerful and stick with the £35 4650. spend the change on something nice...

oh, and this will run circles around the 5450
