Currently still gaming on an i5 2500k overclocked to 4.2ghz. I'm eagerly waiting for Fallout 4 but I'm wondering if my current CPU is going to struggle playing it?

Depending on what res/detail level you play at. Your more likely to be constrained by a gpu. Your cpu overclocked as is fairly capable

My other half plans to get Fallout 4 and has an i5-2500K at stock. Pretty sure it'll be fine for 1080p but obviously we can overclock it if needed.

Is Skyrim single or multi core heavy?

I imagine Fallout 4 will run similar.

IIRC like Fallout 3 it only wanted two cores. Higher clocks were far more rewarding performance wise from a higher clocked lower threaded CPU.

Whether Bethesda have decided to change that? well, looking at the specs needed to run the game one could assume that it is more heavily threaded but until it comes out we won't know for sure.

by the looks of some screens leaked over the internet, i HIGHLY doubt Fallout 4 will need you to upgrade.
Recommended system requirements say:
Intel Core i7 4790 3.6 GHz/AMD FX-9590 4.7 GHz or equivalent
NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB/AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB or equivalent

so a [email protected] should do you quite fine

How about my i5 2500 locked, got it paired with a amd290 and it bottlenecks in parts of crysis 3.

Crysis 3 is a badly coded POS. Plenty of better looking games with more physics going on that don't have the CPU thrashing trouble that thing has.

2500k with any decent clock is still absolutely fine.

2500 may start to drop off going into the future, but you wont be losing a huge amount of frames.

Crisis 3 is stupidly demanding.

I wouldn't discourage anyone wanting to upgrade their CPU, but for one game? Nah. If you can find more than five then maybe it's time to think about it.

Me, I'm keeping my 2500k until Zen is on the horizon. H2 2015 has been a rip off period for CPUs.

Bfar I totally agree. Wait for Zen and see what's on offer from Intel. With luck there will be choice and competition. Until then my 2500k and a next gen gpu will keep me going :)

I have a 2500k at 4.6ghz 1080p, GTX 780... More or less runs everything at max settings just fine, So I doubt it.

Have to echo this really!!

I intend on buying this game and im running the i5 2500k @4.2 like OP.
Still a very capable CPU for gaming, i cant see it being an issue really.
I also have the 780 3gb. If anything the GPU will suffer a lot more than the CPU will.
