H'evening.
Right im currently on an X1900XT, A64 3500+, 2gb ram, nf4.
So, im considering either crossfiring what i have (mobo, xfire gpu, psu). But it occured to me that i would probably see a big CPU bottleneck.
So, considering I have no desire to get a bigger monitor meaning not requiring more than 1280*1024 resolution, would I benefit more from a bigger CPU or advancing my graphics set-up? PURELY from a gaming perspective, and in your own opinions.

At that res xfire/SLI is pointless.

The way to improve gaming perfromance is to upgrade the cpu.
That cpu is holding that x1900 back.

Did oc`ing your cpu make a big difference? i`m curious,i hear a lot about this `bottlenecking`.You`d understand that on something like a 1 gig athlon compared to a 3500,but the 3500 is pretty good anyway isn`t it?

I`m an overclocking newb but have a read here http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/oblivion_athlon_64_x2_fx_cpu_performance/page15.asp

Once details are up over 800x600 they say it doesn`t matter a jot what cpu you have, the 3500 is up there with the fx.The difference is like 0.1 or 1.2 in fps.Only in res 800x600 do they notice the difference like 5-10%.

Maybe, like me you might need to lower your expectation of running oblivion with max settings. The next big upgrade with dx10 cards might see us playing this well.

"It is currently impossible to play this game under any configuration with an silky smooth frame rate"

Like i say,i`m new to this, interested to see how this discussion goes and if cpu performance is better in different games.

i think it will be better to get the crossfire setup. It will be much more beneficial compared to upgrading the cpu (e.g. to upgarde from a amd 3500 to a amd 4000 or fx 57 will not be worth, yu might as well overclokc your 3500). in the tomshardware link (above) the settings are at low quality, i think it will be a much more different story with it all maxed out which is what you will be using. With a x1900 and a amd 3500 will do fine. even if it is cpu limited, so its stuck at 80 frames in far cry you wont notice the diffrence from 100 frames. ( its like what is the point of getting an amd fx 60 to play at massive resolutions (i.e 1900 by 1200)as the cpu wont make a diffrence in most new games especialy if the settings are maxed

vft

I dont play Oblivion
I have a free upgrade coming and was curious about peoples opinions on this. Dont know what this 3500+ will do in OC terms, I have had it at 223*11 on stock volts (1.4) not tried higher, though I should since the HTT was on 4x divider and so short of 1000 and the ram is reduced to 166 ( making about 178) , I dare say that I could eek some more out of it on a better motherboard.

Dual core is relatively pointless on what I currently play (BF2, DoW, CSS), iirc, though it might be worthwhile for when UT2007 is released?

Sorry mate i must have oblivion on the brain lol it is one of the most taxing games( i must have got another thread mixed up :)) .

The data on toms cant really be aplied tbh, Looking at the 3D05 score its on a 6800 GT or equivelent. Bit of a difference between that and a x1900xt.
