Upgrade time- spec me!

hello OcUK!

long time no speak. The pc has started to feel sluggish so it must be upgrade time. I'm really not sure where to go from here though! my current spec:

i5-3570k running at normal clock speeds (unable to access mobo bios.... don't ask)

Asus p8z77-i Deluxe ()

8GB 1600 DDR3 (again standard speed)

XFX 7950 DD

2x SSDs, 1x HDD.

Bitfenix Prodigy Case (limits size of potential upgrades i guess).

BeQuiet 530w Non modular PSU

I game in 1080, and while I can still run everything I now find myself compromising on settings much more. I have a limited budget (£2-300) which I am worried will be eaten up if i need to upgrade the PSU for new parts.

Any help or advice would be awesome.

Cheers guys

Mat

I have moved from windows 7>10 and the problem still persists. Do you think that being able to overclock the CPU would solve all the problems? I was thinking the GPU would be the bottleneck at present.

"started to feel sluggish" :p

I'm on a Nov 2004 Build on XP :( you should try my machine lol...Don’t get me wrong the old girl has done me proud and has been in daily use for hours. Gave up play games around 2007 on it. Getting a new high end rig from here later/early next year to play Elite, Dayz. :)

Good luck with what ever you do.

I know someone with a couple of corruptions in Windows 7 (System File Check showed them) in their build, and upgrading to Windows 10 kept the same corruptions. So a clean install would be needed to truly discount it.

CPU overclocking would help for some things, as would a faster GPU for more FPS in games, but my gut tells me the sluggishness problem you're talking about is operating system/drive related.

Thanks for the advice all. Perhaps I've not been specific enough- the 'sluggishness' is not during OS use, Its more like when I'm gaming, unless I compromise on settings I just don't feel like the experience is as smooth as I'd like

Thanks for the advice guys- Would a 970/980/390 require me upgrading my PSU or would I be able to run the setup from my 530W still?

Your PSU should be fine mate for a single 970.

If it was me, anything like a 980 I would upgrade the PSU too to give the PSU some headroom. It would probably work fine, but you would be pushing it near it's limit.

Full draw on a 980 can consume 420w+ so add in the rest of your components and you'll nearly be at load on the PSU. Too close for comfort in my opinion!

Thanks very much.

I have looked around and I could be wrong, but from what I can see the 980 and 7950 seem to draw an equal amount of power? Therefore if my current PSU runs the 7950 fine (even when OC'ed) shouldn't it also run a 980?

I did say it would probably fine, I just err on the side of caution if it was near the limit personally.

Besides, the 980 is £80+ above the top end of your budget @ £380+ up... I thought the budget was £2-300? That's why I suggested a 970 @ £260 mark... :p

Yeah fair points Sparx! I was looking at possibly buying a used card to get more bang for my buck. Still unsure on whether to risk the PSU or not.
