My friend is currently running an ati radeon x550 and wants to upgrade, he has a 350 watt power supply and a 3GHz pentium D processor (Don't know which one though but its 3 GHz at stock).
i have an x1800XT on an opteron 165 running at 2.3-2.6 GHz (depending on the weather) i have a hyper type r 580 watt power supply. i have a 17" mon and he has a 19" widescreen mon.

he is wanting to spend no more than £200. I was thinking of buying a bigger power supple for about £70 for him and then selling it and my x1800 for about £180 or so, and then upgrading myself.

what do people think of the idea?

Silly question - is he on AGP or PCI-E?

What would your budget be for a new PCI-E card? £110 or £180? You might struggle to get a better card than what you have for £110. If you're spending £180, then I'd go for the cheapest x1950XT.

He is running on PCIE. (on a generic MSI board...dont know where the model number is on it but it is definately PCIE)

i would be prepaired to spend up to, about £250 ish or something (maybe an x1950 XTX or something but that would be my limit)

I'd consider a change to an X1950XT 256mb for around £160 and a Corsair 520w for around £70 if you are going to sell your graphics card and PSU to your friend. I'd definitely keep the Corsair for yourself though, it is a better PSU. :)

the hyper has been doing very well with me so far, and also i thought that it would be a lot less hassle just buying my friend a new PSU as it meant that i didn't have to take my rig apart too much and that he wont complain about getting my old stuff ;)
thanks for the advice though!
