Upgrade time!

Hi guys, prices are looking really great now for cpus so I thought it would be the perfect time to grab a bargain.

Right now I'm using a E6400 Core 2 Duo as stated in my sig, however it is clocked at default speeds of 2.13Ghz. I can't seem to push this much higher because I suffer from very bad high temps. My cpu idles at 50 and under load rises to as high as 59. This is all with a Artic Freezing Pro 7 cpu cooler.

Inevitably, being unable to overclock my processor this leads me into wanting a better processor with a higher default clock speed.

I've been looking at quite a few cpus and ones that look nice are:

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition"
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 "LGA775 Conroe"

I thought about the E6850 but decided for the price a quad would be better.

My question is: Is this worth upgrading? Mainly it's my cpu that is holding me back in games.

Invest in some sandpaper (for lapping), and reseat your HSF. Sounds like bad contact to me.

TIM? Do you mean thermal compound?

If so, artic silver 5.

Thermal Interface Material, silver goo that goes on your CPU to fill in the microscopic gaps in the surfaces.

am using the same core2duo atm and have it overclocked to 3Ghz using a tuniq tower, idle temps about 31degC and full load about 46degC so somethings defo up with your cooling

Okay, I looked inside my case, took off the cpu fan and examined and the culprit seems to be that one of the plastic clips that fits into the hole on the motherboard has snapped. So, understandably it hasn't been getting a great deal of contact on one corner.

I will admit I never liked how the artic cooling freezer pro 7 went in, it took numerous attemps for me to get it on.

So now, begs the question on which cpu cooler should I get now that does not have flimsy plastic clips?

Perhaps I should even get a new cpu, I don't know if it is damaged or not...

You'd have to try really, really hard to kill a C2D with heat alone.

Should be fine, either way you should get a new CPU cooler. Tuniq Tower would be good, what case do you have?
