Upgrade Time?

Hi guys, havn't been on here for quite a while.

Anyway, I've had my current system for nearly 2 years and I'm wondering if it's time for an upgrade?

Budget wise I'm thinking £1000-£1200ish. Dont need monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse etc, just the tower.

I like to keep an eye on the latest hardware but couldn't tell you that much about the subtle differences.

You guys helped me out a lot on my last build so a bit of advice would once again be welcomed!

CPU wise I originally thought it had to be an i7, but the quad core athlons look pretty good and a lot cheaper? My curent machine has a Q6600 overclocked to around 3GHz, would the athlon be much better or the i7 the one to go for?

Also on graphics I really regret not getting an SLI board. At the time they were pretty new and with a 8800Ultra I never thought I would want/need to upgrade. So I definately want an SLI/Crossfire (or even tripple) capable board (preferable Gigabyte, had a lot of problems with Asus boards in the past). Which leads me to graphics, I'd like at least one 'decent' card (maybe a dual) with the option to SLI or Crossfire later. Once again I've heared a lot of good things about the ATI stuff especially comparing price to the few extra fps you get from the GeForce stuff.

If anyone can point me out what products I should be looking for CPU/Mobo/Graphics I'll spec something up.

Thanks!

the system in your spec looks perfect for what you need, just update the graphics and itll be fine :)

Yeah but I dont like the case so defo want a new one Antec 900 2 or CM690? And since im changing that I'll need to rip everything out which will be a major ball ache (teach me to buy a cheap non modular case). I have a friend who's offered me £600 for my old tower so for £400-£600 I can get a whole new system for not that much more than 1 or 2 decent graphics cards (thats my thinking/reasoning anyway)! ;) Not sure the gf would agree but hey!

Sorry, should have said I don't need OS.

How do you guys rate the 4870 against the 260? With the extra memory would the 4870 be better for my resolution?

I have a similar spec and am also dying to upgrade, but I know I'll feel sad when I hook it all up and find there are no games to play. I have decided instead to upgrade all the stuff that doesn't get any love when I build my tower, like speakers, mouse, keyboard, etc. It's surprising how much better your pc looks and feels just by upgrading the simple things.

They're the only things that I like lol! And my Gigaworks 7.1 has been built into the walls so that ain't getting changed anytime soon!
