Upgrade Time

I think I'm getting to the stage where an upgrade is needed. My CPU is four years old and getting long in the tooth. Will probably go for a 4780K @ 4.2GHz and 16GB RAM this time.

The big question is what video card? Ideally I'd like something like 140% of the performance of my 680 SLI set up but not have to go to two cards.

The biggest killer at the moment for me is VRAM - 2GB is no longer really cutting it. So, ideally, I'd like to try to go one card of one of the following:

1 x 780Ti 3GB (yet that feels quite low on VRAM)
1 x Titan Black 6GB (but is it worth it?)
or wait for a 1 x GTX 880 with XGB of VRAM. But if all the rumours are correct that won't be until the back end of the year.

What to do? Triple screen gaming is a priority.

You won't get a single card with 140% 680 SLI performance. Here's a review of 770 SLI at 5760x1080: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_770_sli_review,22.html

A 770 is just a 680 with higher stock clocks, and as you can see even three Titans won't get you a 140% performance boost.

So in other words: wait for the next generation of GPUs.

What CPU do you currently have?

You already have a very decent system, so just wait it out it bit longer. A 5930k or 5820k is worth waiting for, and what is wrong with SLI 680s?

Also where did you hear that the GTX 880 won't come out until the end of the year?

My 770 handles 3 screens like a dream, considering its amount of Vram, only a handful of games can run ultra, but the likes of BF3/4 will happily do it on highish settings, but since I rather smoothness instead of eye candy I normally run it on medium, even on a single screen.

Dirt 3 on Ultra on 3 screens is a stunning experience. :D

Yes, you're right that might be a good upgrade to consider too. Re the GTX 880, just from reading various sites and stuff. Plus they have a 790 coming out next month and also a Titan Black, unlikely that a GTX 880 will emerge until those puppies have had a fair crack of the whip?

Yes, the sims I run are iRacing (no issues) Project CARS (quite graphically demanding), rFactor2 (demanding) and Assetto Corsa (demanding full stop). Perhaps I should hold off until the summer...
