Hey guys,

Looking to move to a Z390 setup, looking for a new intel CPU/decent Z390 board and 16GB DDR4 to replace 4790k/z97 pro gamer. will be selling that to fund towards the upgrade so what would be a decent upgrade? Not bothered about top end but something decent! Bit out of the loop so advice would be great. Up to £1000 budget maximum.

I game at 1440p btw!

If you could list rest of your specs, would help a little to know cooling, case size etc but as a straight intel upgrade , 8 core i7 9700k and clock to 5ghz all cores. Aorus board with WiFi ( Aorus being one of the best made z390 boards and to price as well, plus match your Aorus card )

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £863.06 (includes shipping: £11.10)

OCUK do a killer Aorus flagship z390 and i9 9900k bundle for £1050, but again need a damn good cooler ! Comes with ram and SSD

Would I be better off with an i9 9900?

The question is do you need it? Or are you just lusting after that i9 to "future proof" your build ;)

What do you use the system for aside from gaming (as you don't need an i9 9900 combined with your 1080Ti to game at 1440p (you'll already achieve this with your existing setup).

Although, if you can afford it and will see a benefit from having it then I'd say go for it :)

Have you taken a look at the pre-built bundles on OC? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pc-components/upgrade-bundles/intel-z390-overclocked-bundles

Save your money as it simply isn't worth it. I went from a 4790k @4.6Ghz in a Asus Maximus VI Hero and 16Gb of Samsung Green clocked to 2133mhz c9 to the setup I have now (in siggy) and to say that I was disappointed with the "upgrade" is a understatement. I have thoroughly benched before and after the "upgrade" and the results are disappointing, just 411 point's extra in Timespy, 329 point's extra in Firestrike Extreme, 29 points extra in Heaven 4.0, 5 points extra in Valley, the list goes on. Even the addition of a NVME drive has only really made bootup a fraction quicker. Outside of benchmarks I can't tell any difference from the SSD's I was running before. I also game at 1440p and have only seen a few fps difference in the games I play (mostly simulators). Depending on your usage a 9900k may be worth it for the extra cores and threads but anything less isn't. Do what I should have done and wait for the new Ryzen in the middle of the year.

Thanks, I can’t believe how long my setup has last me! Will intel have a rival for the new Ryzen due out?
