Upgrade time?

Hi. Long time since I have been here. In 2016 I came here for advice on PC parts which I purchased and built my first PC. It is still going strong and without and issues thankfully. Although I build my own computer I have not kept up with the PC build game and all of the new released parts etc so it’s a bit of a minefield for me still.

Since time has moved on a bit I am back looking for further advice and this time it’s to look for upgrade advice.

I will post a screenshot of my current setup below…

https://ibb.co/P56zcWb

but wondered if you guys think it’s worth upgrading and if so what should I upgrade and suggested new parts.

The games I play are Rust, Football Manager, Transport Fever 2 and a few others. I think Rust is the most demanding.

As I said above the current setup is working fine still but you do notice it starting to lag a bit when more demand is expected from games

I am happy to keep any parts that are worth keeping and I don’t need a keyboard, mouse or operating system.

Budget would be up to £600

Thanks

honestly I think it's time for a whole new build, but that'd be double the budget, maybe you can find a gpu upgrade though - 3050 coming out around the end of the month might be suitable

this is rust specs

System Requirements
requires a 64-bit processor and operating system..
  • OS: Windows 8.1 64bit.
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-3770 / AMD FX-9590 or better.
  • Memory: 10 GB RAM.
  • Graphics: GTX 670 2GB / AMD R9 280 better.
  • DirectX: Version 11.
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection.
  • Storage: 20 GB available space.

So a quick upgrade would be a radeon rx 480 or 580 second hand. No need to upgrade the psu either but they are expensive going for £200+ which is stupid money for a few years old card.
    • Such is the stuidityof the gpu market atm :(
An i5-6600k is about £75 second hand and would be a good boost as your not playing the most demanding games so there is little reason to spend on buying a new pc altogether. But if you did want to do that...

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £465.05 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Best value. You could recycle your case, heatsink, SSD (to save money for a gpu) and old ram but im not sure how much difference the old ram would make to the newer chip

Hi Folks!

Sorry to resurrect my old post but thought it was better that than starting a new post and it may also help with a little context.

I was looking to pick your brains regarding a small upgrade. Previously in the reply post above by 'dfour' they mention that upgrading my CPU to a second hand i5-6600k may be a decent option on a budget. I see these can now be found for around the £50 mark. They also mention looking at a second hand Radeon Rx480 or RX 580 GPU. I see these can now be found for around the £80 and £95 mark for the RX480 (4gb/8gb version). Or £90 or £120 for the RX580 (4gb/8gb).

This advice was from a year ago and I wondered if its still the best option of if things have changed and there now better options before I buy these items?

I have copied a link below of current setup which I bought through overclockers a long time go now.

I still continue to play mainly 'Rust' but have recently started playing 'Satisfactory' which my current setup cant cope very well with as the game progresses as more items appear on screen and demand increases.

Budget it low at around £150-£200 and I know that wont be enough for any major changes but something that will do for now and let me run these games a bit more smoothly

CURRENT SETUP <----------

Thanks!

From the system requirements of that game, going from a dual core to a quad core would help you to meet the minimum spec. If you can get a i7-6700 or i7-6700K it would help you even more in modern games (since they have 8 threads), but they're obviously more expensive. With a bios update, your board would support 7th gen too, I should imagine, which may give you more options in the used market. There are unofficial BIOS mods available for Z170 boards to support 8th/9th gen, but I'm not sure if they're available for H110 boards (or if it would be a good idea for a board like yours).

Your current graphics card is not very far from the minimum requirements, according to TPU it is somewhere around a 1050 Ti.

Personally, I'd be considering a GTX 1070. RX 480 or RX 580 were very popular mining cards and their power draw is quite high for the performance offered (unless you undervolt them).

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

So if I didn’t want to mess with BIOS options is the i5-6600K still a decent option?

Would the GTX 1070 8gb with the i5-6600K make a noticeable difference do you think?

Thanks

just go for the non-k cpus (you have a h110 board which does not support overclocking so the -k is wasted)
6500 is cheap, would avoid a 6600 as it usually carries a premium
6700 would be ideal (has hyperthreading)

as tetras says, can get the 7th gen versions of the above after a bios update (7500/7600/7700) - these are just slightly faster clocked (+200mhz) versions of their 6th gen counterparts...so depending on the price difference may/may not be worth it

Would the GTX 1070 8gb
absolutely.
the 1070 is more than double the performance of a r9 380

Thanks Tamzzy. I am one of those people who can put a setup together using pictures and videos but don’t quite understand all the ins and outs of the parts so this has been helpful. I can Google it later when I have time but is a BIOS update so I can use the i7 easy to do?

There doesn’t seem to be much in price difference for the used CPU’s mentioned.

i5-6500 3.2Ghz - £18
i5-6600 3.30Ghz - £25
i5-6600K 3.5 Ghz - £40
i7-6700 3.40Ghz - £70

I appreciate these are used and not new.

Based on the above would the i7 be your first choice? What about second choice?

Thanks again

Ouch, I wouldn't pay £70 for a 6700...£50 maybe, but definitely not £70

6500 and 6600 has a £7 premium between them so depends on how much of a penny pincher you are.
Recommended requirements for rust is a 4790k so the closest CPU to that is the 6700

If this were my build...I would not want to invest any form of money into it as it's basically going the way of the Dodo
I would want to keep this as cheap as possible...so just drop in a 6500 and a GTX 1060 6GB or RX580 8GB
(or a 1070 depending on price)

6500 + 1060 6GB/RX580 8GB is a nicely balanced build

6500 + 1070 is bottlenecked by the CPU

6700 + 1070 is a balanced build

Thankyou again for your time.

So 6500 it is then. If it were you are you choosing the 1060 or the RX580?

I appreciate you would be picking neither but pretend it’s 2017

I assume either will still make a notable difference and be worthwhile in comparison to what I have although I appreciate it that it will in no way be out there breaking records.

If it were you are you choosing the 1060 or the RX580?
1060 6GB/RX580 is about 70-75% faster than the R9 380 you have
1070 is 120-130% faster than the R9 380 (or 30-35% faster than the 1060 6GB/580)

If the 580 has not been heavily mined on, this would be my pick over the 1060 6GB
Why you may ask...it's because the nVidia scheduler is very dependent on the CPU, so you're likely to get more out of the 6500 using a 580 than a 1060

Will have a watch later tonight.

I am right in saying these options you mention will be a straight swap for what I have?
