Hi all,

Currently running a ryzen 5 3600, 1660s and an old Dell u2713hm @ 2560 x 1440. Considering an upgrade to something like the LG 27gl850.

So few questions - would the jump in hz push the graphics card much more? Is it really worth changing? Is there anything else in modern monitors that woudl improve the experience comapred to the older screen?

Tend to play more strategy than anything else, some World of Tanks that sort of thing.

Thanks

Well... the gaming experience will be smoother for sure.

When a game is showing lets say 200fps that's how much your graphics card is producing

Your Dell screen has 60hz meaning it refreshes 60 times a second. (It can only show 60 images a second)

So out of 1000 milliseconds (1second) you see only 60 frames.

Having 144hz Monitor will allow you to see 144hz out of those 200fps (frames/images per second) that your GPU and CPU is producing.

It is not needed to have 60fps to play world of tanks and other games.

From my personal experience I prefer 144hz (Once you go 144hz you never go back to 60hz).
I do play World of tanks and game just looks and runs smoother.

(It does not put extra stress on your GPU, unless you run with Vertical Sync and that locks your FPS at Max 60fps or to whatever is refresh rate of your monitor).
Once you have 144hz the screen tearing is barely noticeable.

Best thing would be for you to try it out before buying. Maybe hold off with a purchase, once the electronic stores start functioning properly you can checkout their 144hz display monitors.

Thanks for the reply. Think I've decided to get one as I've had the current one about 5 years, just wanted to be sure it wasn't going to strain my build overly.

Cheers

There is a significant difference in games, but really you will mostly notice the difference going to 90Hz. Thing is that once you try it, it really is difficult coming back to 60Hz! The difference with your graphics card you can normally measure. Just switch off VSync, and see what frame rate your graphics card runs at. If it is getting 90Hz plus then you are doing well, and you could justify a higher frequency monitor with GSync or Freesync. Even if you are not constantly achieving that framerate you might consider just getting a monitor with GSync or Freesync for better low frame performance.

At first I didn't really notice huge jump in smoothness going to 144hz but as others have said, having got used to it now it would be hard to go back. When I am back on 60hz it is not a great experience!

Go for it! The LG 27GL850 is a brilliant IPS monitor for gaming. Freesync (or Gsync) will help quite a bit even if your GPU doesn't push 144fps in games. As others have said, you won't want to go back to anything less after getting used to a 144HZ+ refresh rate. There's also no point choosing a TN panel when modern IPS can pretty much match pixel response times and provide much better colour accuracy and viewing angles... Unless you're on a budget of course and the TN is a fair bit cheaper.
