Currently have a Crossover 27" 2560x1440. Have been using it now for a couple of years with no issues.

However like the look of the new 29" and 34" LG 21:9 monitors.

Can anybody tell me if it is really a worthwhile change. Have a GTX980 in my system and wondering if it is best to stay with what I have.

With a single card you are probably better off where you are, a 3440x1440 screen will be a goodly amount more demanding and a 2560x1080 would probably be something of a step down in image qualiy

You will lose quite a bit of height going to a 29" 21.9 monitor:

34" 21.9 will have the same vertical height as your current 27" 16.9 screen:

A 980 should be enough for the majority of games on high/max settings [with no AA] (mrk has one [also had a 780 and 290x] and doesn't have any troubles) although when it comes to the really demanding games i.e. crysis 3, metro then you will have to drop a few settings. However, for all we know, the games coming out next year could be just as demanding or perhaps even more demanding....

Depends what FPS you are happy with though!

IMO, it is definitely worth jumping to a 21.9 monitor, can't express just how much more immersive gaming is and not having black borders when watching films is sublime.

Regarding the 2560x1080/29" monitor, aside from screen real estate, there won't be any loss in image quality/sharpness, if anything, it will probably be better as these LG 21.9 screens have the best anti-glare coating I have seen on any monitor, amazing clarity/sharpness.

Try and test one out or at least get to a shop and see one.

I had a DGM 1440p monitor stolen and after using a 24" old Dell for a while I decided to go for a 21:9 LG 2560x1080 monitor. I liked it and it was indeed a beautiful monitor with a great and vibrant screen. But I just could not get used to the lack of vertical height, being very slightly less than my 24" and much less than the 27".

There was no way I could afford the 34" higher resolution LG and so I decided to go back to a 27" 1440p. There are aspects that I do miss from the beautiful 21:9 but overall I feel better with a 16:9 27" and I'm glad that I made the return. The BenQ 27" seems slightly better in picture over that of the LG but I do not use a monitor for films generally and so that is not important to me, prefer our larger Plasma for that.

For many people it works out well with the 21:9 choice but try your best to take a look and test one out first.

Regardless of which monitor you go for deal with a retailer where returns are easily accommodated, after needing to return two AOC 1440p monitors I know the value of that.

Good luck.

I currently have a foot in both camps. I have the 34UM65 and a Samsung 16:9 27" 1440p monitor.
I really wanted the 34Um95 but as I've mentioned in other threads I just couldn't justify the £300 premium between the UM65 and the UM95.
I thought I would miss the vertical real estate between the 1080 and the 1440 but I really don't. And let's be clear, in terms of actual PHYSICAL height a 27 inch 16:9 monitor and a 34" 21:9 are EXACTLY the same.
With the £300 premium I mentioned I decided to keep the Samsung and use it for productivity work (due to the extra vertical real estate and the sharper resolution) but I have found myself using it less and less anyway.
I love the LG 34 and it is just a bag of awesomeness for games and movies. I'd rather have fewer pixels and have a good, quick, sharp image than have to drive more pixels and drop below 60FPS.

Thanks for the feedback. May try and see a 34UM65 in the flesh.

Getting more into car games as well and thought it may be a good screen for the likes of Project Cars when it is released.

Had thought about going triple screen with 2 more Crossovers. But costs to start running all of this goes through the roof.

Racing games are out of this world on the 34UM65. I haven't got round to buying the pre-release of Project Cars yet but I play a lot of F1, Dirt 3, Grid Autosport, WRC 4 and Assetto Corsa and the 21:9 is brilliant for it. In cockpit mode (I don't use it that often truth be told) you can see the whole windscreen and more. In F1 particularly the field of view is almost frightening sometimes.

I made the move from cheap Korean 27" ips to a Dell U2913WM.

While image quality was better and having an ultrawide screen was a really nice change the loss in vertical space was really a deal breaker.

From what I gather the 34" ultrawides are much better (they are effectively the same height as a 27" 16:9 display but obviously you get the extra width.

I would personally suggest only considering the 34" 21:9 screens. I think you will find a 29" a step backwards.

The ultrawide screens are great for racing games. I play Assetto Corsa a lot and before this I had a 144hz benq and now I have a 34 21:9 screen and the difference is massive. Its so much more immersive and the clarity makes it great aswell.

There is no 27" 21:9. The 29" are still plenty wide... 34" is something else though and more immersive obviously. Curved being optimal.
