Hi all

I have some spare cash at the moment and was thinking of buying a

Hanns-G HG281D 28" TFT Monitor 1920x1200 800:1 500cd/m2

I have read up and they seem to have good reports for gamers such as myself, except the brightness and contrast being high from the box, but this can be adjusted obviously.

My current monitor is a

Samsung Pebble SM2232BW 22" TFT Monitor Widescreen 1680x1050 3000:1 300cd/m2

It has served me well and has never given me any problems but i would love to get a bigger screen my budget is about £300 and the 28" Hanns seems to be a steal for the £250-£300 price range

My grfx card is a Zotac 280 GTX AMP

Shall i go for it??

Thoughts and comments welcome

I hear this monitor is good for the money but I wouldn't go expecting a screen quality any better than your current samsung. For gaming it seems to do the job well when set up properly - same for movies.

However, I would suggest looking for higher quality panels instead of larger size ones. It may seem a waste of money when talking about it on forums - but if you go into a PC shop and compare the quality of the monitor on an iMac and a standard dell - then you will understand the premium.

This and this monitor use similar high quality panels and are in your budget - you won't get the size upgrade you are looking for, but you will see the large increase in image quality and viewing angles.

Image quality is a pretty important factor but, and this is a big but... when im gaming fps is my poisen and to be fair image quality when compared to size means tosh to me.

the thing i find when im tearing through a map lobbing nades and shooting anything that moves is irarely stop to admire the bush he was hiding in!
i replaced a 22" hanns-g with this 28" model and the size is amaizing to me even though its only 6", my friend replaced his 20" samsung pebble with this and he was even more impressed.
now even before i purchased this monitor my 22" hanns-g didnt quite keep up with my friends samsung pannel, the samsung as you know owning one is a good panel great colours and a nice sharp image, but i still wouldnt have traded the two, the extra two inch really made that much differance to me and what I USE IT FOR, and there is the deal breaker. its all down to what you use this monitor for, if you want to edit photos and need a high contrast and true to life colour and black reproduction that a monitor three times the price can give you then this monitor isnt for you, if you watch a lot of movies on your pc and sit more than 4 foot away then the panels inhearent flaws are gonna become a problem youl struggle to get over.

now if you like your games, use your pc to surf, download and watch the occasional show on because the missus wont get off your cimena set-up then fire away with this monitor. a little tinkering with the settings like any monitor need out of the box and its great and the size is unreal for the money.
dont expect to pull a £800 monito out of the box and you wont be dissapointed!

I must add, the picture on this is great, my bashing of image quality over real-estate gives the impresion there is none to be spoken off in this monitor, this is wrong, great picture. games look great just not good enough to impress the techphiles ( think i got that right lol)

I'm with the guy above... a decent monitor with a good size means more to be than an amazing smaller monitor.

And honestly, who gives a **** about viewing angles on a monitor? if you're not sat in front of it then you're doing it wrong.

I have the 28" hanns-g and I absolutely love it. Before buying it I was considering the 24" IPS monitors like the Hazros and HP ones but I'm SO glad I decided to go for something bigger with much better value for money :).

I think im gonna go for it i like what you guys said and if im not happy i could allways use it for my kids ps3,

I mainly play GTR Evolution and X3 TC but also play Oblivion and Fallout3. Im not worried about viewing Angles and i think its a steal for under £300

Cheers Guys

I really don't understand why they don't put some decent 1200/1080p 28"-30" monitors out there, theres a market for them, as it is we are stuck with relatively small monitors with high resolutions, using LCD TV's or alternately these stupid 30" displays with insane resolutions which need crossfire and sli solutions to play the latest games.

Or if your really desperate multiple montiors, however how any can game like that is beyond me.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has an opinion on how this compares to the Dell 2709. I'm using an early 2407 but really fancy going for something a little larger for general surfing/gaming/xbox/TV. I've a home for the 2407 if I do upgrade but I'd hate to make the change and end up with a monitor that although bigger doesn't perform as well.

I'm with ebilcake on this. This section of the market seems to be pretty much ignored which is a shame. 30" screens run at too high a resolution for most people to want to spend the money on a rig to drive games at a sensible frame rate. With 1920x1280 PC gaming (and 1920 x 1080 for 360/PS3) being more common now a good 27" / 28" gaming monitor for around £500-600 would sell well I think.

Hi there, I may be able to advise you a bit on this upgrade. I went from a 2408WFP to a 2709W and it was the best upgrade I ever made. It has all the high quality of the 24in, but with much more viewing area - which makes watching movies and playing games a treat.

As in my above post, I value picture quality over size - but the 2709W has both, it just costs a lot. If you can afford it, it is a fantastic monitor and an absolute treat to use every day. Its pretty difficult to compare it to the HANNSG as it costs less than half as much as the 2709W, however, if you are like me and have got used to the picture quality of the 2407 - I don't think you will find the HANNSG's image quality and viewing angles acceptable (not that they are terrible, but they are a definite step down from a 2407).

I switched from a 2407 to a 32" 1080p tv and haven't noticed any drop in quality. I'm not a pro gamer or anything which I guess might be the killer but either way I'm happy :)

Hmmm, tempting, especially as it's on offer for £589 at the moment.

i bought this : Hanns-G HG281D 28" TFT Monitor 1920x1200 800:1 500cd/m2 monitor and sent it back for the following reasons:

Viewing angles are awful.
Monitor makes a loud electric buzzing sound which was very loud and annoying.
Monitor is not very sharp or crisp,as in picture even with adjusting settings.
Top of the screen is very dark.

But the sheer size of this monitor is great for gaming.
im now in the process of possibly buying a Dell Ultrasharp.

Ok

Back from work yesterday and hooked this up this morning,

I have Played fallout 3 and X3 allready and i am very happy with this monitor so far.

I did find the brightness high but i found some settings on this forum that someone posted up and changed them and its much better now.

I payed £255 for this and to be honest for that price i really cannot fault the Hanns-G HG281D I am very pleased with it, It does not look a cheap monitor as it has the black piano look. Also it has some good adjustment too from the stand.

Thankyou all for the comments and suggestions it helped a lot.

I've got one of these monitors and have had it around a year. I absolutely love this screen. You won't notice the picture quality unless you are coming to it from a really good screen or regularly use one. I personally only notice when I'm next to my friend at a lan (he has a 24" hp ips). The backlight is slightly uneven but you wont notice most of the time. If you don't know what the ~£500 monitors look like then you will be more than satisfied with this one.

That being said, when I finish my degree I will be most likely getting a 30" dell.

;)

Glad to hear people being impressed with the monitor. Im currently on a Dell 2209WA monitor which is great, but hardly ever do any image editing/graphics work anymore and just game and browse the web really. Been looking at selling and moving to the Hanns-G as the extra size would be great... just not sure if theres room on my desk haha
