Upgrade to 3080 hardware update?

As with a lot of people just now I'm contemplating some upgrades. My current system is an i7-5820k with an MSI X99A-SLI motherboard, 16GB of DDR4 and a 1080ti. I also have 2x 27" 144hz monitors with the main use being gaming with graphics cranked up and VR with my Vive.

Recently I was contemplating an upgrade to an AMD Ryzen processor but with the release of the 3xxx series coming soon I wasn't sure if I should upgrade mobo/cpu first and use my current 1080ti or go for the 3080 just now. Would my current mobo/cpu be a bottleneck to the new card?

If funds allowed i'd just upgrade it all but that's probably not going to be likely.

I'm in the same position going up from 7700k. I am just gonna wait and see what amd and intel release over the next few months in terms of new cpus. Also we will see if pci-e 4 makes a big difference before investing.

I too have a 7700k with 1070Ti. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get a 3080, 3900X, B550M, 32GB DDR4 3600 and PCIe 4.0 NVME boot drive. I'll transfer my other SSD's over and sell the other bits as parts. The biggest pain will be re-installing everything from scratch. That'll probably take a week.

I have the 5820K and asus deluxe x99 mobo, 32 gig ram and 2080 at the moment.

Interesting that the new 30 series cards have come out at so much better value that imagined. That means that OI am considering a 3070 which should be a good upgrade over my vanilla 2080.

Like you, I have to wonder though if my 5820K is going to be an issue in really improving my games a 1440p.

I asked a similar question in the cpu thread but didn't get much of a response. I've got a 5930k @ 4.4 and I run triple 1440p from a 1080ti at the moment. Can't afford a 3090 at the moment so a 3080 looks a good buy but I am concerned if the cpu will hold it back. I guess it's hard to answer until the cards are released and one of us bites the bullet :D

I've been thinking about the same as well. My 4790k however isn't exactly struggling but with Zen4 coming in 2021, I'm going to hold out until then.

I’m running a 6700K and had, before selling, a GTX 1080ti. Looking to get a 3080 and see how the system runs rather than buy a whole new mobo bundle now. Hopefully it will be fine for another year or so.

Thought it's better to hijack this thread than start another similar. I'm running a gtx970 on an x58 Asus P6T system with an overclocked x5650 and 24gb ram, most of what I play is "old" but I'd like to try some newer titles and recently upgraded to a 165hz 1440p screen. Will the card run on PCIE2 or is it pointless upgrading to a 3070/3080 on this platform? PSU is a Seasonic M12 700W.
