evening all

i currently have a 8800 gts 512, which seems to be overheating a touch. i also have managed to avoid throwing money into the black hole which sites under my desk for a good 12 months so the upgrade monster is well and truly banging at the door.

Anyway i digress, i have done a little browsing at the forum and the top recommendation at my price point £110 - 150 seems to be the 5770, would a jump to this give me a decent performance boost? i run a 22" monitor @ 16xx

secondly noise (and to a lesser extent) temperature are important to me, am i right in thinking coming down from an enthusiast(ish) card at the time, to a modern mid range card should be quieter, cooler and more frugal on the juice, can anyone confirm this realworld.

with reference to the above does anyone have any decent links/experience with the aftermarket coolers ie cucore & vapor-x vs the standard?

the 5850 would seem to be the enthusiast sweet spot but it a little too rich for me atm.

if you have made it this far thanks, i really must condense my posts, any comments greatly appreciated.

From what I hear, the 5770 is low power and quiet. My 4890 is silent and only has a small whooshing noise under load. The fan never goes past 35%. I therefore assume the lower power consumption of the 5770 can only make it even quieter. Gone are the days of the vacuum cleaner noise (x1800xt!).

The upgrade will be large. I upgraded from the same card as you to my 4890 and there was a big difference. I believe the 5770 to be just a tiny bit slower than this.

ATI 5770 is a good card which is low power usage, Low temps and also very quiet. I would not advise to get the 5830 as It not worth the money you pay for it

There not bad cards. You can crossfire them as well with massive increases. The drivers still need to catch up to be supported on most of the games.
