Any advice? From a 8350 to one of these.

I wouldn't mind the extra threads since I like to play games and watch streams/yooutubes.

Would overclock both.

Is the 6600k better? I've seen some videos and it performs with 20 more FPS but yeah...

Paired with a 980TI.

If you upgrade often then go for 6600k If not Then 4790k long haul

For a gaming / general use approach skylakes main benefits will come from the newer motherboard features. Its a trade off between the extra threads of the haswell and the marginal ipc gains and newer motherboard features of skylake.

If your stuck with budget or stuck on the two cpu's listed then I would side slightly more with skylake because you could always slap on an i7 kabylake cpu sometime later next year although you'll still be buying a 4c/8t CPU. If you think you may benefit from more cores/threads x99 is the only (Intel) way to go

6600k as its more future proof, better efficiencies etc and still has a great OC potential, X99 is great if you want more threads/cores however you listed streaming and YouTube which isn't as hugely application intensive as Sap enterprise or running large code debugd, I know somebody with a 6600k, they stream and it's not seemed to have a negative effect on performance, they haven't even oc'd. It will depend of course on what you want to stream at...noticed you said to watch streams anyway It won't be a problem

Price difference between 6600k, mobo and ram compared to just mobo and 4790k?

Let's say my budget is 400, what can I do? or what would be best.

Cheers

MSI Z97 PC Mate £65
4790K £256

You can get the i5, mobo and ram for roughly the same price shopping around.

TBH on second thoughts I would probably go with skylake as haswell is a dead socket, the i5 is a great performer.

I see in another thread in general hardware that you already have the Z97 motherboard and a 4690k? The simplest upgrade would be to sell the 4690k and drop in a 4790k.

Aye but I was thinking about sending it back as I got it a week ago, but wanted to know if it was worth just going to 6600K or buying a 4790...

At current prices, if you're making no losses on your current Haswell hardware through returns, Skylake.

If you're making any significant losses, stick with Haswell. I'd not bother with the 4790K if you already have a 4690K. You've not mentioned any use cases that would benefit the i7 to make it a better value proposition.

If you need HT 5820K

If you dont need HT then 6600K or 6400 with a suitable BLK OC MB such as my i5 Bundle. if we want to save some cash.

Thanks everyone! Sent my i5 and mobo back and got a 6600k bundle from here! Sadly have to wait until Monday now.

What kinds over clocks would I be looking to get with Skylake?
