Upgrade to a 390X?

The VTX3D card is just the PowerColor one with a slightly less fancy shroud. Everything else is identical, right down to the blue thermal pads. Club3D's is another rebrand of the same card.

I think the Powercolor also has an extra VRM set.

Maybe. They all use the same PCB marked LF R29FA ver 1.0, which TUL just recycled from the 290X. Guess there could be component changes for the cheaper models. Hard to find any detailed info on the lesser-known brands.

recycled 290x? I was hoping this was a decent upgrade from my 290x :/

The 390X is a 290X.

Of sorts yes but slightly tweaked and newer hardware. Its not just a rebadge as has been discussed in depth on the AMD threads on here when they were launched :)

It is an improvement especially if you can't find a cheap 290x on the market.

seems like most retailers have discontinued them but have found one a big name site that still has a couple "Sapphire AMD Radeon R9 290X Vapor-X Tri-X" version for £255.

Wondering if its worth the extra £40-50 for the 390x, that being said im potentially buying old stock but would this still carry a regular 2/3 year warranty?

The dies are the same,
The memory and timings and clock speeds are different, and cooling tends to be upgraded over previous 290 aib's.

Your in exactly the same situation i was about 6 months ago, my 290 croaked, or at least i thought it did.... turns out it was the PSU leaving some strange carbon deposits on 2 of the 6 Pin PCIe connectors, i didn't realise it was doing that until the 970 started behaving the same way the 290 did, thats when i had a closer look at them both..... but anyway.

Having to spend the money i didn't want to get the 390 as they are similar GPU's, so given that i had to spend the money at least i was going to make it a change, so i got the GTX 970, very nice GPU but a side grade at best, even the 980 is no upgrade really, certainly not from a 290X and i'm just not comfortable spending £400+ on a GPU.

Anyway, I think for the sake of £40 get the 390X, you should gain a few percent, i don't think they are exactly identical, i think Crey may have a point.

Found the 290x even cheaper now on the French version of the site for £212 delivered so now its confusing on what to do.

Thxs for the the input so far tho! Maybe best to hang fire and see what 2mrw brings may find a 390x sub £270

Er, that'll be electrical arcing. You really need to sort out a new lead for that.
