Upgrade to a 990x?

Unless you can get one really cheap I don't see why anyone would get a 990X these days with 3930K available... it's clock for clock faster, overclocks better and has PCI-E 3.0 etc.

If you wanted a hex core I'd flog your X58 stuff and make the jump to X79 rather than getting a 990X.

In the case of Shogun2 (and possibly Empire I'm not sure) the game only makes use of one core, so going from a quad to a hex is going to make no difference there, I can't speak for Civ5 and GTA though.
