Hi, Need some help with considering whether to upgrade my PC as i can afford to go whole hog and buy a New System

Current System is P4 3.4Ghz, 1Gb Ram, ATI 9800 Pro 256mb (AGP Pro/8x Slot)

Would like to know how much of an improvement a ATI HD 3850 GDDR3 512mb card would make on my existing and also whether additional memory would be a plus also?

Your help is much appreciated :)

Depends what you want to do with your system and what your budget is. For an AGP 3850 you're looking at about £150, plus another gigabyte of RAM will be £20+.

Personally I'd sell the system and build a new one.

Sorry I looked at post again after reading your replys and it should have said that I can not afford to buy a whole new system. But I could probably spend about £200.

I use the computer for gaming purposes mainly.

For £200 - consider the following

Abit IP43 Intel P43 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £32.19 inc VAT (it's b-grade in the clearance section)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.20GHz (800FSB) - £59.79 inc VAT
OcUK 2GB (1 X 2GB) PC2-5300C5 667MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - £16.09 inc VAT
OcUK GeForce 9600 GT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - £73.98 in VAT

Reuse your case, Optical, HDD and PSU. Total cost: £183 (+ shipping, which takes it to 200).

Not stupidly fast but way better than your current system + any AGP card

For £200 I would go for something like this but thats if your current PSU has enough power for it

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 7750+ Black Edition 2.70GHz (Socket AM2+) - Retail £57.49

(£49.99)
Foxconn M61PMV nForce 430 (Socket AM2/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £36.79

(£31.99)
OCZ Platinum Revision 2 XTC 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)

Actually, for £8 more I would change the E2200 for an E5200 CPU. Much better processor.

Both specs (AMD or Intel) would be significantly better than upgrading your old P4 based system.

Thanks for the advice much appreciated. Would you say that both setups have room for expansion in the future regarding processor, memory etc?
