I am hoping to go from my GTX 580 to a GTX 980 Ti soon, but do you think my present Asus P8Z68-V motherboard will be ok or will I need to upgrade that as well, just wondering as its getting on a bit if it would be a bottleneck
Thanks

I have no idea about the motherboard, but make sure you pay a fair price for a second hand 980 Ti as the 1070 is out very soon for ~£350.

an i5-2500k and your motherboard will be fine with a 980ti. However as said above with the GTX 1080 out now and soon the GTX 1070 you dont want to be buying a brand new 980ti and a second hand 980ti should pay no more than the figure quoted above. I have seen them going for less.

so even a 1080 would be ok if I could convince the wife

It would be fine but a 1070 should do the job, especially for 1440p and lower while keeping the wife happier with the price. What resolution are you at, 1080p?

Yes 1080p at the moment but I hope to be going up to 1440p, thats why I wanted a better card

yes definitely

im using a msi980ti 6gb gaming with a sandybridge p8p67pro 3.1 and a 2600k and no issues so I think it wil work no bottleknecking at all. in fact a brilliant combo.

1070 will demolish 1080p and is a great 1440p card too. I would imagine a good custom aftermarket 1070 like a EVGA FTW will be easily 3x faster than a 580.

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful,
I have since read on a post somewhere that someone had to update their BOIS with this m/board to get their pc to boot with a newer card, but I don't want to do that unless absolutely necessary. I will see when I get my next gpu

I wouldn't worry about updating the BIOS, it's about as straight forward as could be I don't see you struggling at all with it.

As above a 1070 is a very capable 1400p card and offers a lot better value for money than the 1080. I opted for the 1080 as I'm at a slightly higher resolution (different aspect ratio) and feel the additional 10-20 fps (from memory, it might be less) of the OC 1080 to OC 1070 would reduce any small drops in newer titles.

The new 1070 is slightly faster than a 980ti from what I have read so far. Should be priced similar as well so I'd go for the newer card.

Don't bother with the 1080, it's ludicrously overpriced.
