Upgrade to i7?

I know there are a lot of threads about this currently, and I apologise for starting a new one.

I will hopefully have some money in September which, if I wanted to, would allow me to be able to upgrade my current E6850 to an i7.

Now, of course, the main question is, is it worth it?

With everything that is being announced with the new i5/i3 and the changes to i7s soon, is this worth it?

Surely, an i7 would future proof my system for at least 3 years or so? (until the end of my uni studies).

From a roadmap that was posted in a thread in this board, it seemed like the 920s might not be being discontinued so soon?

I have heard a lot of good things about the i7 920. Good CPU, easy to overclock and excellent performance. I spend a lot of my time gaming the latest PC titles, and currently have a GTX 275 (possibly going to SLi it also).

I have been shopping around on Overclockers, and I reckon I can upgrade now for around £500-600, with possible reductions in September if I'm lucky.

What would anyone else do in this position? Really, I want to future proof my system for a good few years, and I think this would be my best bet, rather than sitting around for i3/i5/i9 lot. They will probably cost me more, for around the same performance as they will be newer.

Thanks in advance for all advice =)

Sorry for the long winded post

Edit: This is the build I would be considering:

I think it'd be a good upgrade from your dual core, and will definitely last you three years.

Probably be best to have a see in September, but it's quite possible to do an i7 upgrade now for £450.

As you can see from my sig I did exactly what you suggest. I bought the i7 and the 1366 mainboard for it's longevity and performance.
The question for you may be the price. A lot of people are expecting the i5 to be cheaper than i7. Of course we haven't seen any price lists yet, so like always you pays the money and you takes your choice.

There's always another generation coming.

I think I'll sit tight until September, and then take a serious look at an i7 upgrade. Bit more future proofing for my system. Also, if I ever come into money to buy an i9 I would be sorted with the correct motherboard at least =D

Think you just have to go for what you want and buy it I suppose, otherwise you always play catch up in the CPU game. The 920 seems like it will last me a while if I was to buy one =)

What do you count as future upgrades? =p

Only thing I have to take into account currently is my Windows 7 purchase. With a Caviar Black and an i7-920 should be flying along for a few years I think =)

Whether you're willing to pay like £400 for a CPU, considering that the i7 920 socket is going to be for people with deep pockets.

At the end of the day, I see this as an upgrade for the future. From what I'm seeing, I should be securing a good system that will last me around 2-3 years with a bit of overclocking there also.

The other thing is, if I ever go have a chance to upgrade to i9, and my motherboard can handle it, I would already have the RAM and motherboard to do so. I have a feeling, that 920 will still be very good come the new i5s, even if they are possibly cheaper or better for overclocking. Who really needs more than 4GHz for gaming anyway?

One of the road maps posted somewhere else shows the 920 still being continued. Even if it isn't, I shouldn't imagine it being too hard to get hold of one come the end of September. And even then, it's performance isn't going to drop off the face of the earth either.

There would be no harm in waiting would there? Personally I ahve been waying up the same and cant find any bad reason to NOT get one!

So I will soon too be purchasing a similar setup!

role on Windows 7 with it too!!
