So my 3G has finally died and I need to replace it. I am tempted at getting a new iPhone 4 on tesco or o2 but unsure whether to wait. Is there a new version out next year?
Not sure what to do.

Middle cycle at the moment, the 4 is a huge leap from the 3, less so from the 3GS. Depends if you want/can wait till June/July for the update

Translucent/flexible retina display? Duel core A5? Quadcore Mail GFX? 768Mb ram? Better notifications? All of these are realistic possibilities for the iPhone 5 (ok, maybe not the last one :p)

But as you need a phone (and don't want anything running Android/WP7?) the iP4 will be more than good enough ;)

iphone 4 battery life is terrible. 2 days on standby with maybe 3 calls lasting no longer than 2 minutes and not much other use

I want my 6310i back

I'd just get one if I were you. It's still a good 7-8 months until the refresh. If you're always waiting for the next model, you'll never buy anything!

I love having 2 weeks+ standby time. (plus i only call, text and use the calendar)

Why on earth did you buy a £500 smartphone if you were only going to use it for calls and texts?

Back when my N95 broke and had to be sent off for repair, i had to make do with the 6310 for 2 weeks odd. Was hellish painful to go without a colour screen. Also try texting on a phone were a single SMS is split over 3 screens instead being on one screen.

Retro phones aren't as good in RL

a lad at uni is using a 3310 or something after loosing his newer phone. when he texts you can hear the buttons creaking and clicking at the other side of a room

as for OP i would buy the 4 , what is there to be improved that you would need so much as to wait ? its a huge leap over the 3gs if only for the screen res

Last two iphone releases have been in June.

The Mac Rumors buying guide is always worth consulting before forking out cash for an Apple product.

iphone 4 battery life is excellent - for a smart phone. You can't expect a handset which is effectively a handheld computer to offer the same standby time as a dumb phone. Compared to equivalent handsets from other manufacturers the iphone 4 is one of, if not the, best for battery life. As already mentioned a smart phone is an odd choice if you only call and text.

Could also be a dodgy battery.

My iP4 lasts a good 2 days with heavy usage. Albeit, it's on it's knees by 5pm on the second day :o

I didnt (its works on call)

I do like the look of this - http://www.johnsphones.com/

However no text function which makes it useless to me

Just get a 4, 6+ months is ages. If you go with an 18 monther then you'll be ending your contract around the time the iPhone 6 comes out. I got a 3GS in December and while I lusted after an iPhone 4 when it came out it would have been purely a vanity purchase since I'm happy with what I have and my contract ends when the 5 will probably come out. Saying that, I'll aim for a 12 monther then, so I can upgrade every year, lulz.
