I built my son a PC from bit's I had lying around a couple of years ago. The spec is

Intel Core 2 2.4Ghz
ABit F-190HD
4 Ghz RAM
NVidia GeForce GT620
SATA Drive etc

He now wants an upgrade as it is his birthday. We have an XBox1 so don't need anything too great for gaming but he would like something that will run games.

I was thinking of this -

Intel Core i3-6300 3.80GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor £119.99*
Kingston Fury Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 PC4-21300C15 2666MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (HX426C15FBK2/8) £32.99*
Asus H170M-E D3 Intel H170 (Socket 1151) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £74.99*
Cougar STX 650W 80 Plus 230V EU Power Supply - Black £41.99*
MSI GeForce GTX 750Ti OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £89.99*

I'll probably keep the existing case, OS and HDD

Any suggestions on how to improve?

Also my daughter has a newer Lenovo which is not far off the spec listed above other than it doesn't have any sort of GFX card in it. Would it be worthwhile recycling the existing GT620 into her machine?

With a few changes you could get better for your money.

Better GPU - Link

Save yourself £20 on the CPU, he'll notice no difference when using it. A better quality power supply (Superflower are a top-tier OEM). 450w is easily more than enough for the upgrades. No point in spending the extra on faster RAM, 2400 will be fine and again, he'll not notice any difference.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £358.97
(includes shipping: £11.10)
