When both GPUs on the 5970 are working well, it's a fair chunk ahead, when both aren't working well, it's around the same as the 580. However you're best waiting until AMD's 6900s are out, they should be around the same performance, if not more (6970) for less monies. A lot of info on them should be coming out sometime this week I think.

I'd get the 580 if you want something now and it's in your price range. Either that or wait and see what the new 69xx series offers. Whatever you do though, don't bother buying old tech unless it's at an extremely good price and fulfills your requirements.

The 5970 at stock clocks is not to much of a beast but if you are overclocking the 5970 has a good bit more headroom over the gtx580. Most people with gtx580 are settling around the 850 on the core which is only a 10% overclock. The 5970 will usually do around 950 core which is a good 30% speed bump. I don't know anybody that would get a 5970 and not atleast put it to 5870 core clocks as i think even amd said it was downclocked to lower the power. If it was me buying atm i would get a gtx580 but theres no doubt that the 5970 is a good deal faster especially when you put it at its rightful core clocks of 850.
