Upgrade to Ryzen help!

Hi all,

I'm hoping to upgrade today or tomorrow.

Currently this is my build: https://uk.************.com/list/rrQrtJ

What I'm going to upgrade are:

CPU to Ryzen 1700
Mobo to Aorus Gaming 5
RAM to Vengeance LPX 16GB 3000MHz or 3200MHz

This will cost me around £600+. I will also need an AIO cooler. So make that £700+ for NZXT Kraken x62 (most likely. It's the most beautiful CPU cooler I've seen). Edit: And the Fractal Define C case (I want a change).. make that £800..

Am I making the right choice? Will I be future proof? Any comments?

Not all coolers are AM4 compatible at the moment.

Also 3200mhz ram is difficult to run.

there's a post by Gibbo in the CPU forums, regarding recommended RAM for Ryzen. It seems that 3000MHz is the sweet spot for now.

What CPU cooler would be best for Ryzen? For around £100. I know Kraken is around £120+ but it's pretty! Although I know I won't even notice it. I can try and settle for something less pretty. I know air is better but I hate having a huge block, I want a nice clean interior.

I hear the motherboard is great and good bios updates are following, is this true? It is £200 but if it's very good quality I guess I'll spend that.

Lastly, I'm going to be using this build to game. Overwatch, Recon Wildlands, etc. I understand Ryzen is not beating 7700k in benchmarks but it's not using 100% CPU and seems a bit smoother. I'll risk it and see if games start utilising other cores.

Am I making the right choice? Help me spend all my money!

Why not stick an i7 in your current system ? It would work out cheaper.

Because:

1 - I currently have DDR3 RAM which is around 1600MHz (I think?). 2x4 Sticks. If I wanted 16GB I'd need to buy a whole new RAM stick set.

2 - Motherboard is cheap and isn't made for overclocking. I can't even get 4GHz on my i5.

I'd rather have it all up to date rather than sticking more stuff in to a quite old build. Does that not sound good?

I don't think you are going to see much of a difference though going from an i5 to a Ryzen if you are just gaming. If you are doing other things that can take advantage of the extra cpu cores then sure.

If your current system isn't struggling then I would hold off on a cpu upgrade for now and wait for Ryzen 5 1600X cpu as it will be cheaper still whilst giving you 6 cores/12 threads. It is due Q2 so anytime from April onwards.
