I'm getting quite sick of XP and being stuck on SP1 (won't say why) so I am thinking about buying vista home premium, is it possible to straight upgrade without formatting?
As I have a lot of stuff that I'm not keen on losing :(

Vista is a fantastic OS, and yes, you can upgrade. I have never performed an upgrade install, so won't be able to guide you on that part.

But, personally, I would invest in a secondary hard drive, or an external drive and copy all of your data to this secondary hard drive, and remove it when installing Vista.

Not as straight forward as that, see this chart

Yeah this was my secondary plan, but needs more money so would be put off a lot longer.. I've been putting off buying vista for too long already haha

Poop. So guess I'd need business or ultimate.. pretty ridiculous that you can upgrade to any from XP home when it was the cheaper one?

It's about parity of features. XP Pro had features that Home did not, and in order to complete an in-line upgrade, you have to have at least all the features of the old OS available. There are a few things that Vista basic and home premium does not have that XP pro did, although they were not really of use for the vast majority of home users, that mean they are not a viable upgrade path without a clean install.

In all honesty if you've put off buying Vista for this long, I'd put it off till Windows 7 comes out (which will be about the same time that Vista manages to defragment your hard drive :D).
