I have a lap top I fixed for a friend (dying hard drive) who in the mean time went out and bought a new one and said I could keep the old one in exchange for rescuing most of his files. Nice deal... however it had win 7 home on it which I then upgraded to Win 10 but would like to upgrade to Pro.

I have seen upgrade keys as cheap as about £25 when hunting around... I know I can't name a site in competition on here but these seem a little suspect to me. The question is can you get upgrades as cheap as that or am I right to suspect it as a scam?

If it seems too cheap, it is. I found this the hard way a while back when I bought a Windows 8.1 Pro key cheaply. Microsoft's site accepted it as genuine and allowed me to download an ISO, I installed it and the key activated Windows - I was a happy bunny. Fast forward a couple of months, I reinstalled Windows (I'd messed something up) and my key wouldn't activate and had been blocked after being used too many times, presumably the seller had sold the same key to lots of people. No recourse from the seller or website, so just a lesson on my part, can and I bought a genuine copy.

In the short term, a cheap Windows key will work, but in the long term it's just a waste of money as it will come back to bite you when Microsoft notice it's suspect.
