Upgrade worthwhile?

Evening all,

Been out of the game and barely using my PC for about 5/6 years. So much that my tower isn’t even connected to anything anymore and I even bought an Xbox!!!

I’m very much an old school gamer so I doubt the new games will keep me interested for long but I feel like I’ve neglected my rig so much that I should get back into things again.

Spec is in sig and I think is correct. My question is - would a simple GPU and additional RAM upgrade have much of an effect on the more recent titles at 1080p? Given I don’t game at all currently, I would love to avoid forking out for a whole new rig, it’s pretty much not an option because it would cost what? £1500?

Let me know if this would be a waste of time or breathe a bit of life into my rig.

Have to say the 920 DO was/is an absolute soldier given it’s so old....what a great CPU imo

Thanks in advance for any input

Adding a GPU will always give you boost in FPS, bit that CPU is old so you want get the max frame rate of that card you paid for . Jump from 1st gen to 2/3rd was the most substantial compared to anything else intel has released .

What games DID you play on the PC ? Listing that, othersaybe able to highlight modern versions of that genre games that might like etc to give you a heads up .

I played TFC mostly back in the day. Most recent games were BF3 & BF4 which were visually impressive but the gameplay didn’t keep my attention for long.

So you don’t think my CPU will bottleneck a new GPU too much then?

Shouldn't bottle neck it to much if it's overclocked , you won't get the full FPS the GPU could make compared to newer i7s due to core speed and CPU design tweaks .
Coffeelake was advertised a lot to pull 1st gen owners that haven't upgraded.
Worth waiting for computex start of June to see what intel produces

Depends lot on resolution.
At lowly 1920x1080 any relatively new graphics cardhas enough muscle to push out lots of fps in most games if CPU just delivers that frame data.
Though unless monitor is over 60Hz model that is very likely moot point.

Yeah I use a 144Hz monitor so as much FPS as possible.

I guess I’ll take the plunge on a new GPU then if it bottlenecks a lot I’ll think about overhauling the system.

Thanks
