I've currently got a dual core 4200 CPU with 2x512 RAM in an Asus mobo. Wanting to upgrade coz I can.

Am I right in thinking I may as well go for 2x1gb to fill my last two slots?

I think you'd be better off getting a 2GB kit (2x1gb) and taking out your 2x512. I reckon having 2GB at 1T command rate would be faster than 3GB at 2T.
Also having 2 dimms will probably be more stable and more overclockable than having 4.

The above is correct, I have 2x1Gb and haven't managed to ever use more than that so far, with BF2, Oblivion (though I've got close with lots of visual mods) and F.E.A.R.

So at the moment having more than 2GBs is a waste, go with a 2x1GB kit, flog the 2x512MB.

Gskill ZX, OCZ PC3200 or Corsair PC3200 are all a good choice.
