Currently i have:

AMD x2 3800
2gig PC3200 (4x512)
Asus A8N-E
ATi HD2900XT
Corsair HX620

Basically i think its time to sort out the mobo, cpu and ram for something a little more modern game friendly, as, well, either im doing something wrong, or the 2900 is suffering due to the rest of the kit

Thinking of spending ~£400-£450 to bring the rest of it up to speed (cpu, ram, mobo), and maybe consider a sound card in that aswell

So, wheres my money best spent?

Core 2 CPU e6850 is a screamer, P35 motherboard (most of them are good) , decent RAM. If you only use 2GB, get 2 x 1 GB modules.

Is your PSU up to the task, otherwise a new modular PSU.

RAM is around 100-140 quid, CPU is 180 and the boards range from budget 80 to premium 190.

If you wanted you can go quad-core and 4gb Ram within the budget as well as fitting in a good CPU cooler. :)

would i be better off investing in quad core, or a new dual core, like the 6850?

Depends what your uses are really. I'd probably go with the quad core and overclock but then that is as much down to wanting to skip dual core entirely as any real need. :)

It's a no brainer for me, definitely the Q6600. If you want a Dual Core get a E2160, it will easy enough overclock to E6850 speeds and for the price of a Q6600 you cant go wrong :)
