Which would be a better upgrade?

I currently have a 4980.
Would adding another be more of an upgrade then just buying a new 5850?

no, was thinking of getting another 4890 and then maybe in another year replace them with a single card.

But would 2x 4890 be as good as a 5850?

How much have you got to spend? What is your current monitor setup and res?

These should answer you questions in terms of performance (Just a quick google search), the 4890 in cf will outperform a single 5850:

The only real card that Nvidia have to offer around that price range is a 460 which doesn't perform as well, again all depends on how much your willing to spend
