Hi,

Looking at upgrades ( planning stage at the mo)

current system is based on I7 920 DO ( not clocked)
18 GB memory
Gainwood 470
240 GB revodrive ( this is to be installed this week, replacing a SSD)

Had this rig for a while now every couple years I tend to upgrade a couple of components

1) would I gain massivelly by going from the first gen I7 to the current I7 ( assuming that a new mobo would be required)

2) Would going from 470 to 670 (or even 680 ) give me a massive improvement

If you are just using the PC for gaming then just get a good heatsink and overclock the CPU. It should achieve around 4GHz.

Upgrading to a 670 or 7950 would be a good upgrade.

Your CPU shouldn't be bottle necking GPU's for another generation and its CPU mobo and ram to replace.

If it were me i would grab a 7950 or a 670 and hold off on the CPU to see what Haswell has to offer.(OCing should help too)

considering the overclocking route (in the short term and then budget for 670 or 680 - trying to convince the misses another screen ( touch) would be good ..so would defo need a gpu upgrade)

is this base enough for overclocking

CPu is cooled using coolit vantage (extra fan added to push and pull)
GPU cooled via Accelero Xtreme Plus II VGA Cooler
ram is cooled using the stock 2 fan cooler (fitted over the top)
case is antec 1200 with oodles of fans (coolermaster 12 cm sickleflows) + fan controller
