Hi all this is my first post on here :).

I'm looking to upgrade my computer in the next month and have £500 to spend on components. The components I'm currently looking at are:

Zalman Z9-U3 Mid tower case - £48
Saphire Radeon HD7950 - £210
Seagate SSHD 500gb - £60
AMD FX6300 Black Edition CPU - £90
Asus M5A97 Motherboard - £70

I'll be using a few bits from my current system including a TB HDD, 8GB DDR3 ram and Monitor.

I was wondering if this set up looks ok to everyone for fairly high spec gaming and are there any other components that would do the job better for a similar price.

Steve.

Slightly over budget, but does include a better Cpu, mobo and an ssd.

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI HD 7870 Black Knight 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (R7870-2GD5T/OC) £167.99
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £119.99
1 x MSI 990XA-GD55 AMD 990X Chipset (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £79.99
1 x Plextor M5S 128GB Solid State Drive - (PX-128M5S) £74.99
1 x Zalman Z9 USB 3.0 Midi Tower Case - Black £54.98
Total : £512.04 (includes shipping : £11.75).

If you do a google search for "VTX3D Black Edition Radeon HD 7870 (Tahiti LE) OC", that is on a par with a stock 7950, OCUK seems to have stopped selling them.

I've been recently reading though that the extra gig of memory on the 7950 will be very useful once the PS4 and Xboxone come out.

Well if you want to spend the extra £60-80 on the 7950, who am I to stop you. Bear in mind, to do so, you will have to make compromises elsewhere to fit it in your budget. So for the extra GB of Vram you get a lesser Cpu and mobo.
Although, I don`t see what the extra Vram has to do with the PS4 or XBOX1!

An article on Eurogamer was saying that the next generation of consoles would bring about an increase in ram used on pc games.

Nor sure if this is necessarily true and I'm also not sure how much extra power a 7950 will give over a 7850.

A 7950 is a lot better than a 7850. The 7870 (Tahiti LE) OC when OCed will be on a level with a stock 7950, which makes it a better value/performance card, than the 7850, 7870 or 7950.
