Ok so it looks as if it's my gpu thats gone dead on me when gaming so I am looking to get a new one.

What would the choice be to see a good increase in performace from what I have at present on a budget of around £350.

I've used AMD in the past but last two cards have been NVIDIA.

Thanks !

The best cards you can get for your money from both sides.

AMD - £330 AIB 290 - One of the best 290 cards going

Nvidia - £10 over budget at £360 but comes with a free game to sell - reference 780

Performance between 780's and 290's is similar. But out of those two choices above the custom cooled 290 is a better card and has a powerful and quiet cooler.
