Upgrade ?

Hi all,

I'm potentially in the market to upgrade on my current rig. I mainly play MSFS24 and at the moment its is eating VRAM so much (I know this is potentially a bug and hopefully sorts its self out eventually) Also occasionally play FPS (COD, GOW etc). However, I'm just looking for opinions on should I consider upgrading for the future.

My current rig -

MOBO - MSIB550 Gaming edge WIFI
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor
RAM: 32.0 GB
Storage (2): SSD - 931.5 GB,SSD - 931.5 GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 TI Founders Edition
PSU - Corsair RM 750W

I was considering upgrading to AMD (either 7900xtx or the 9070xt) the 7900 is appealing due to the 24gb VRAM . Other options would be 5070ti. Is 16gb VRAM enough at the moment and in the years to come ?

I would be looking to sell the 3080TI to reinvest, also miby upgrade the ram to 64GB.

Would my current rig support this upgrade.

Thanks in advance for any help

i would get the 9070xt or 5070ti if you're desperate to buy right this moment
if you can wait then the rumoured 5000-super series refresh should have 1.5x the vram the current non-supers have now

nah, just keep with 32gb

for MSFS and COD, you are much much better off going with an X3D cpu
so in your case, the 5700x3d
unless you want to do a full system upgrade to the 7800x3d/9800x3d on AM5, but this will be a much more significant outlay

I'd be reluctant to upgrade the RAM right now, for a few reasons:
1. If/when you do a platform upgrade, you can't take it with you.
2. DDR4 is a lot more expensive than it used to be, though maybe you could find a deal or a used set.

7900 XTX and 7900 XT have an outdated feature set and though both cards do beat your 3080 Ti, the difference is not fantastic.

I'd wait for the Super versions if you're about to dump £1K on something. The 5080/5070 Ti are supposed to get 24GB and the 5070, 18GB.
