It's time to replace the rear discs and pads on my F31 335d.

Simple question, I already have the msport larger brakes, is there any point for very normal driving to go anywhere other than standard OEM?

Like would I get any benefit or am I just complicating my life by even thinking about it?

The M Sport brakes are borderline oversized for normal road use already so I wouldn't bother (345mm on the rear and 370mm on the front), I had trouble keeping the outer edge disc surfaces clear through winter.

If you are replacing them for OEM look on eBay Douglas Park BMW dealer sell the OEM discs and pads for £330 which is cheaper than the non OEM parts unless there is a particularly good deal on Autodoc.

You have to be careful if you don't go OEM the discs are two piece with aluminium bells and some of the cheaper ones aren't.

Good to know thanks.

I was thinking more a bit of looks with drilled etc certainly not bigger as that would get crazy expensive.

Wondering if there were any potential up or downsides (assuming I'd get either OEM or a proper branded drilled/vented etc)

I 'd stick with plain discs for normal driving, I find the drilled/groved discs to be slightly noisier on the road. They do look better but you'd need to match the fronts or it would look silly and the front discs are pricey.

Cost up some disc/pads from oem equivalent manufacturers e.g., brembo, ebc, etc and see how that compares to bmw options
If there's not an awful lot of difference then oem probably is the best option!

No

Larger/better brakes won’t stop you any quicker for road use.

Tyres have a larger impact on braking performance for road use :)

Plus you’ll upset the hydraulic system balance. It’s specced at factory to provide optimal pressure for the discs and pads your car is equipped with. If you start changing out for different sizes you could negatively impact the system, ending up with spongey brakes.

I meant just the consumable bits, the discs and pads not the system itself.

Oh god, don't reignite the brake/tyre stopping debate!
