I am not sure how you do it on a Sony laptop, but you really want to force reset the the CMOS, and then give it a try. You could try removing the battery and unplugging it from the mains and then holding the power switch for about 30 seconds, that might do it. But as I say, I don't know the particulars with Sony.

Ohh so that is possible with laptops then, i will google it and see theres a way. Its really weird as i thought it would be a straight swap out and in for the memory. I had the glass of water ready for the laptop a minute ago :)

Model is PCG-7V2M if thats any help :) I really need to try and get this working as its got quite a bit of data on that i need. I know it can be rescued but the delay would be a pain

have you tried on each of the original memory in each of the slots in turn, i know some sonys had issues with dodgy memory sockets. Also is there a small reset hole on the base?

Yep it was a seating problem, it seems that me messing around with it a few times has got it solved. Thanks to the guys with their input, hope now to have a quicker laptop and few £ in my pocket
