I've got a 755 MT, had a 2160 in running at 1.86Ghz ... Now normally, i power on the machine, the dell logo appears, then the intel matrix raid screen appears and displays my disks, then after 2-3 secs that dissapears and then my Windows loading screen appears and off we go, the CPU would usually sit at 34ºc Idle

I've just swapped the 2160 for a 2180 now up at 2.0Ghz, and when powering on, the Dell screen appears, then the Intel Matrix RAID screen, but then it will hang on this screen for 45 secs until it dissapears and loads windows ....

Why would this be?

Also, the CPU seems to be idling at 24ºc ... why would this suddenly drop over 10ºc lol?

Thanks

Why did you swap them in the first place?
I do hope you didn't actually buy that 2180 as an "upgrade"?!

They're spare CPUs, some of the machines at work were physically damaged and cannot be replaced, so we've stripped all the parts out of them ... i had a E2160 in my machine, and we had about 20 spare E2180's ... so i figure we'll try flog some, but i'd use one myself .. freebie upgrade from 1.86 to 2.0 ... which i hadnt now lol

might put the e2160 back in and see if it changes anything back

Maybe the CPU was slightly damaged after all.
Could be a bad HS and Fan seating, compared to the 2160.
Go back to the 2160 and overclock, if that Dell BIOS will allow it.
