Hi

Strange problem here, philips iqon older pc with a celeron and a 512mb pc4200 dimm in it.

Maximum ram allowed is 2GB, had a spare 1GB 667MHz DDR2 thats backward compatible sitting around so have installed this into dimm slot 2.
The pc is reading this ram and now showing 1GB instead of 1536 any ideas why this might be?

Im thinking of swapping the dimms around see if it makes a difference but other than that im stumped.
Possible it just doesnt like mixed speed and another 1GB 667MHz DDR2 would work?

any suggestion appreciated

it should show up regardless of the speed, it would just clock down to the speed of your lowest ram module, try them seperatly, if they both work, might be a mobo issue

Thinking the mobo might just be really poo to be honest the original 512mb is working and the new 1024mb is what its running just now ignoring the 512mb in it allready. bios is only reading 1024mb so also ignoring the original stick.

im sure 1024 instead of 512mb will make a decent difference in win xp anyway

As the above guy said, try the 1Gb stick on it's own. You may need to clear the CMOS first.

If nothing shows or fails to boot, you may have a dodgy stick of RAM. Try it in separate slots too.

Some older motherboards iirc insisted in equal RAM where present.

1GB Stick works fine by itself
512mb stick works fine by itself

512mb stick in first dimm slot
1024mb stick in second dimm slot = Windows only sees the 1GB stick

Will try 1GB stick in first slot 512mb in second slot and clear the cmos but if that fails it sounds like the board is a fussy git and only liked equal sized sticks.

Cheers for the help :)
