Hi folks. So I got my free speed bump to 100Mbit today from VM.

Tested on Namesco BBMAX which yielded 107Mbit, very happy.

However when I do a real download, I only get 10.5Mb/s. I was previously on 60Mbit which yielded around 7.2Mb/s which is not far from the theoretical 7.5Mb/s. 100Mbit should yield around 12.5Mb/s I believe?

Just wondering why the discrepancy? (as far as I know there is no speed restrictionfrom the source).

Just reset the router. Same... bizzare. ALso tried different port.

Im using the original superhub (and theres an attenuator on the end of the coaxial cable).

Could it be any of that?

EDIT:

Linky to my results:

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1422887130&v=23733150

So its definitely able to do 13MB/s +
Question is why am I being limited.

Are there any other download sources I could try?

If you are using SSL try using port 443.

Will try tonight, thanks, but just to confirm Ive tried with and without SSL and on different ports.

Not sure if port 443 will be any different to behonest.

but the fact that I am getting +13Mb/sec on bbmax must mean that my line supports it right?

What exactly do you mean by a real download?
A file download from a server somewhere?

If you are seeing the correct speed on something like speedtest.net preferably from a virgin media server then I wouldn't see any real issue. VM can only try and guarantee speeds across their network - if you're hopping off their network to the server you're downloading from then you will only be as fast as the weakest link which may not be up to the speed you are now subscribed to.

The firmware flash to the modem to upgrade your speed shouldn't change any of the config but it can on occasion happen.

I may work for Virgin Media but any of my postings are my own views and in no way reflect the views of Virgin Media.

I've noticed Virgin like to throttle newsgroups on the default SSL port, I've always had max speed on 443.

Thanks Dog. Appreciate your input. Im not sure how to flash the firmware on this, is there an online resource to instruct you how to do this?

Really? And they let 443 open specifically?
Bizzare!

I perhaps should have worded that better - what I mean when I refer to flashing the firmware is VM uploading a new config file onto the modem/hub to enable your speed upgrade, not a firmware flash as such.

Is this something I need to call VM about? Or would they do this automatically? How do I ascertain if such an upgrade has taken place?

It has taken place ;) That's how you're now getting 107Mbit!

No need to call. :)

Ah, gotcha :)

Am I right in saying that speeds generally get hammered during peak times (evening times) Im getting nowhere near the 100Mbit speed I was earlier on this afternoon.

Thanks folks, all speed tests are out the window atm since for some reason this time of night gives crappy speeds.

Out of interest is there another VM hosted file site (Dog? I remember when I called some VM tech guys, they gave me a link to some VM hosted files where I can download to test the speed?)

Nah we stopped using the download sites hence why we made servers available on speedtest.net

Are you seeing poor speeds from the afore mentioned site tonight or just trying downloads from somewhere? Where are you trying to downlaod from?
